Job Summary:

Always under the supervision of a qualified employee an Apprentice technical work consists of applying knowledge in power systems apparatus. Perform maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, repairs, construction, installation, modifications, dispositions of power system apparatus installed in power plants, substations, switchyards, and any other LUMA dependencies and private entities. Be available for scheduled standby shifts and respond to calls out related to system outage restorations and/or equipment failures. Responsible for the substation activities of a given geographical area, overnight stays, traveling away from home base and assisting other locations.
This position is with IBEW Local Union 222.

Job Description:

Always under the supervision of a qualified employee an Apprentice will be able to develop and complete the following tasks as part of the Apprenticeship Program:

  • Perform technical work consisting of applying knowledge in power systems. Perform maintenance, conservation, testing, troubleshooting, repairs, installation, modifications, dispositions, construction, and commissioning activities for substation equipment including but not limited to transformers, circuit breakers, capacitor banks, static var compensator (SVC), circuit switchers, disconnect switch (high voltage switch), motor operated disconnect (MOD) switch controller, voltage regulators, surge arresters, battery banks, control cables, wires, grounding mat/ground grid, safety grounds, and other related equipment; perform power system switching and schedule/hold permits; operates insulation oil purification equipment; operates cranes, forklifts, bucket trucks, manlifts or other equipment used to move large objects or materials; as well as analyzes failures and related records of maintenance.
  • Maintain inspection and test records of maintenance. Recording information using the platform available about maintenance activities, including time, location, and material used.
  • Able to identify all health, safety and environmental hazards associated with the work performed; develop and implement safety plans to eliminate or mitigate those hazards. Job safety planning, adherence to safe work practices, operating company assigned vehicles are key components to the position.
  • Understand and comply with established maintenance, testing and work standards and all corporate policies, practices, and procedures as well as all legislative regulations that apply to the work performed.
  • Ensure comprehensive, documented job plans exist for all work performed. These job plans include all required tools, test equipment, manpower (including skill level requirements), job steps, hazards/barriers and references to corporate policies, practices, and procedures as well as a realistic estimate of real time job duration.
  • Assist Supervisor by providing on the job coaching and mentoring for new employees and apprentices.
  • Identify improvements to systems/equipment/facilities by completing substation inspections.
  • Perform site related software, programs and drawing interpretation, and related software/firmware updating.
  • Be on a calendar standby rotation for 24/7 system operation support.
  • Complete work assignments without direct supervision and act as on-site employee in charge as required.
  • Take responsibility for the completion of assigned work, update work in an automated system and ensure the work is of the highest possible quality.
  • Follow all policies and procedures.
  • Perform major storm restoration work and associated drills as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Technical degree/program or relevant certification/diploma in Electrical Power Technology, or other industry related program, or
  • High School diploma with 3 years’ experience within LUMA’s relevant experience as field worker.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Understanding of company safety practices and procedures
  • Familiarity of government and industry standards

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s license – Category 9
  • Driver Record (DTOP)
  • Commercial Transportation Permit/Public Service Commission Card
