Program Overview

The Indonesian forest outlook, which will be packaged in the form of a digital report, is a collection of WRI Indonesia's research related to forest issues. This digital report is expected to provide the latest information on forest conditions in Indonesia, such as the extent of forest cover, and forest loss. In addition, it is hoped that it can provide an interesting perspective on what drives forest cover changes such as forest fires and illegal logging. It also displays the latest news related to several policies related to forest resource protection, such as moratorium policies, social forestry, SVLK, and is not limited to the impact of forest cover loss on emission reduction targets, and recommendations on what policies can be taken. This research will be engaged in a deep dive effort to support Indonesia government efforts to conserve its tropical forest. Candidates will be responsible for creating and maintaining interactive web application for Indonesia Forest Outlook digital report.

As one of the first environmental-economic think-tanks in the country, WRI Indonesia offers a singular opportunity to create impacts in promoting data-driven decision-making process in the public, private, as well as civil society sectors. This position will specifically entail working with relevant government agencies in Indonesia to improve Indonesia's NFMS in order to address the need for robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) system for Indonesia. Project activities include desk study on drivers of deforestation, field verification based on sampling data, support WRI Indonesia’s forest team in conducting research related to forest issues, including assistance in project implementation, as part of development of WRI Indonesia Forest portfolio.  Through these activities and beyond, WRI Indonesia aims to assist Indonesia to implement its commitment to unconditionally reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent against its business-as-usual scenario in 2030 and combat climate change.

WRI Indonesia is seeking for an experienced Back End Developer with strong analytical thinking, keen to solve technological problem to support the Indonesia Forest Outlook.  This position requires a talented individual that have a strong enthusiasm to get involved in technical activities related to server-side logic and create digital solution on forest issues. This position will report directly to the GIS Analyst while working collaboratively with the Forest Team that consist of remote sensing scientists, forester, engineers, communications, in an effort to create cutting-edge interactive web application for WRI Indonesia.

Job Responsibilities

The back-end developer main areas of responsibility will include the following:

Platform Development & Research (90% of time required)

  • Develop and maintaining an interactive CMS web application (e.g. GFW, Resource Watch, Global Forest Review).

A must have features for this application:

  1. In a client side: user can actively seek information based on published year and/or provincial administration
  2. Backend environment: user can upload datasets and create web content in a relevant year
  3. Environment of web application must be dynamic and using well-documented API
  • Assessing the efficiency and speed of application
  • Troubleshooting and debugging
  • Writing high-quality and clean code
  • Collaborate with front end developer to integrate user-facing elements with server-side logic
  • Building a rich-features application for displaying graphs, charts, maps, text, audio, video, images within single/multiple page(s)/dashboards. These assets can be managed easily using backend panel administration to create/edit/delete/update its contents.
  • Building API services for interchangeable data between client and server
  • Conduct an internal workshop along with User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for transfer knowledge on a how-to operate and manage web application

Administration (10% of time required)

  • Fulfill individual administration tasks (e.g. timesheet submission, Back to Office Report, and Technical documentation and specification of web application) as required by WRI Indonesia.

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally able to work in Indonesia;
  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree, in computer science, electrical engineering, or relevant field;
  • Proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia;
  • Hands on experience with programming languages like Python, PHP, Ruby, and Java.
  • In-depth understanding of the entire web development process (design, development and deployment)
  • Working knowledge of CMS framework
  • Familiarity with front-end languages (HTML, Javascript and CSS)
  • In-depth understanding and building API services (SOAP/REST)
  • Proficient working with MVC/MVVM/MVT framework like Django, Ruby on Rails, Laravel
  • Fluency with a Git/Github version control workflow as you’ll work closely with developer.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong attention to details;
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and MySQL database systems
  • Experience working in Linux environment and using nginx as a webserver

Deliverables and Timeline

Research Consultant will receive a compensation based on deliverables submitted throughout the project period with detail of terms of payment as follow:









Develop a prototype within localhost environment



Building a CMS panel administration (both back and front)



Build a dynamic interchangeable data (API) in multiple formats (JSON/GeoJSON/CSV)



Building an interactive dashboards page with dynamic data (populate from database) using API



UAT, Internal Workshop & Technical documentation and specifications  


Period of Work

1 June 2021 – 31 October 2021 (5 month)

Must have authorization to work in Indonesia to be eligible for this position.

Final candidates might be required to take a writing test and to produce two writing samples when needed.

Consultant rate: Consultant rate is commensurate with experience and skills.
