Talon Recruiting has partnered with a market leader in innovative equipment solutions in the industrial, heavy equipment, and material handling sectors.  Together, we are searching for a Rail Branch Manager to join their team in Surrey, BC.

Purpose:


The Surrey Rail Branch Manager will supervise and facilitate the daily operations of the Company's BC Rail business according to set goals and business objectives. This role will leverage the incumbents mechanical engineering background to not only drive and grow current Rail installation and service business but also develop a design department capable of achieving the long term vision of the Company's rail business. 

The incumbent’s immediate responsibilities will cover the manufacturing of Hi-Rail trucks, grow the aftermarket parts and service department activities, improve manufacturing efficiencies, become a key touch point for customers and develop current and new vendors.

The long-term vision for the branch and company as a whole is the development of a design and project management department to support in house product development and external rail project opportunities.

The Ideal Candidate


  • A Professional Engineer with a background in Mechanical design.  An MBA is desired but not required

  • Ideally, a minimum of ten years in the industrial or heavy equipment sector involved in the design and development of equipment

  • Preference given to a candidate with at least 5 years of Rail industry experience

  • Comfortable working independently to prospect, qualify, develop, and close business through a consultative sales process

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle

  • Prior experience in the heavy equipment industry, with a preference for Rail industry

  • At least 5 years of experience building and managing cross functional teams

  • The ability to work as part of a team

  • The ability to lead, mentor and motivate a diverse group when necessary

  • Excellent communication and 'people' skills

  • A strong commitment to customer service

  • The ability to work under pressure and handle challenging situations

Operations


  • Act as liaison between branch and head office management

  • Supervise and facilitate the daily operations of the branch

  • Ensure that company policies including all health, safety and security regulations are adhered to and required standards are met by all staff members

  • Discuss and understand current and upcoming projects in the shop by means of frequent and consistent discussion with the Shop Manager and/or Lead hand to be able to update customers

  • Identify current and future customer needs by establishing rapport with customers to understand service requirements

  • Protect employees and customers by providing a safe and clean branch environment

  • Ensure a working knowledge of all company departments to gain perspective, including marketing, sales, customer service, purchasing, and human resources

  • Attend rail shows to maintain a strong understanding of the Rail industry and promote the Rail brand.
Branch Administration


  • Handle customer issues as they arise, escalating to the appropriate individual as deemed necessary

  • Ensure a prompt, efficient, and timely flow of paperwork from the branch to head office including time card and payroll information

  • Assist in the management of building security, such as the assignment of keys and alarm codes for approved personnel

  • Negotiate contracts and service level agreements for third party suppliers and/or service providers in conjunction with head office

  • Manage janitorial, cleaning, repair, and maintenance service provider contracts and service level agreements

  • Ensure the branch is meeting all company safety and WHIMS polices.
Employee Relations


  • Work with head office management and Human Resources in interviewing, hiring and training of new employees

  • Delegate and manage tasks assigned to branch personnel

  • Perform regular performance reviews as per company policy

  • Provide direction, guidance and instruction to all branch employees as required

  • Ensure staffing levels are sufficient to achieve the Rail Branch’s business needs

  • Ensure that all staff comply with Company policies, procedures and ethical standards
Service Management


  • Develop, implement and monitor detailed inside and outside service strategies and objectives (cold call development, new client pipelines, long term client development)

  • Develop and maintain contracts and relationships with major accounts, vendors and other business partners

  • Develop and build relationships with new clients and develop additional contacts within existing accounts to meet service quotas, increase revenue and continuously grow the business

  • Provide technical assistance to clients as required

  • Focus on providing a One Stop Shop environment for our service customers

  • Remain current with the industry and related equipment

  • Maintain a professional appearance, courteous demeanour and positive attitude

  • Ensure Sales is focused on development of excellent customer service strategies
Design & Project Management


  • Work with the Leadership Team to develop a design strategy to support the company’s strategic goals

  • Hire and supervise a junior mechanical designer whose role is to refine Company’s CAD processes covering Company's products, including mechanical, electrical and hydraulic designs

  • Hire and supervise a project manager whose role is to support the development of products and projects that achieve Company's long-term rail goals
Communications


  • Conduct regular meetings with branch personnel to ensure thorough and effective communications with all employees

  • Maintain regular communication with members of the head office management team
Budget and Reporting


  • Develop service forecasts and weekly and/or monthly status reports

  • Assist in annual budget planning; monitor expenditures throughout the fiscal year

  • Achieve budgeted top-line revenue and bottom-line profit expectations

  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary
People


  • Reports to Chief Financial Officer as primary report

  • Direct Reports – all branch staff excluding the Director of Product & Design Management

  • Key internal interactions – Leadership Team, Service Department, Parts Department, Sales Department, and other Falcon facilities

  • Key external interactions – customers, industry / vendor contacts
