The Opportunity

Applications are being invited for a contrct position with the Finance team as a Business Analyst reporting to the Manager, Costing and Government Financial Services.  As a member of the team, you will play a significant role in ensuring that the company’s objectives for profitability are achieved.  You will work with members of the Finance, Enterprise Information Services, Actuarial Pricing and Group Underwriting teams.

Key Responsibilities

•Provide support in building queries, excel models, and processes to ensure proper integration and control is in place to adapt to our new system technology;

•Preparation and testing of new data sets, resolving issues, and maintaining process documentation;

•Preparation and analysis of experience studies;

•Budgeting, measuring and analysis of underwriting contribution for Medavie’s group and individual blocks of business;

•Development, calculation, and analysis of monthly and year-end actuarial reserves;

•Preparation of management information reports relating to underwriting margins;

•Assisting the Appointed Actuary in preparation of reports required by regulators;

•Managing the organization’s need for, and negotiation of, reinsurance; and

•Completion of industry surveys linked to financial results.

•Other ad-hoc analysis as assigned

Qualifications

Education: Degree in Mathematics, Finance or Actuarial Sciences or equivalent work experience. A CEBS or FLMI designation would be an asset.

Work Experience: 1 to 5 years in a related role.

Computer Skills: Superior knowledge of Excel (pivot tables, complex formulas, Visual Basic/ macros, complex formulas) knowledge of data warehousing and database query tools such as PL/SQL.

Language Skills: Bilingualism is considered an asset.

Knowledge: Demonstrates in-depth knowledge in area of responsibility and uses specialized knowledge and understanding of trends to handle a variety of complex situations that often lead to policy, process and practice improvements. Knowledge of group and/or individual products is considered an asset.

Analytical Thinking: Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail; Uses logic and modeling to solve difficult problems; probes all sources with an ability to find hidden problems; is excellent at analysis in a detailed complex data environment

Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral; with demonstrated expertise in interacting effectively with a team.  Makes decisions in a timely manner, sometimes with incomplete information and under tight deadlines. Provides information needed to facilitate accurate decision making.

Customer Orientation: Customer focused and dedicated to achieving a high level of customer satisfaction both internally and externally

Execution and Organizational Skills: Abiliy to manage competing priorities on their own and focuses on what is critical, while maintaining a keen attention to detail.  Will ask for help and opinion from team members when required

Team Work Skills: Can represent his/her own interests and yet be fair to other groups; is seen as a team player and is cooperative; easily gains trust and support of peers; encourages collaboration amongst team members.
