WSP USA Inc. has an opening for a Community Outreach Specialist to work in the Florida Turnpike offices in Ocoee, Florida. The position will primarily focus on construction communications, community outreach and media relations for the Florida Turnpike. The selected candidate will join a talented group of other WSP communications professionals supporting the Turnpike program.
The position is part of WSP’s national Communications & Public Involvement Practice. This is an exciting opportunity to join our national team of talented communications and public outreach/public information professionals.  
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Community Outreach Specialist  for our Ocoee, FL office working on the Florida Turnpike.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Help reply to media inquiries and maintain FDOT/Turnpike consistency and accuracy in all messages conveyed to the media and the public
  • Promote agency programs by establishing, developing and maintaining contact with media, professional and civic organizations and other special interest groups
  • Speak “on camera” with media as requested.
  • Review Daily news coverage, pull and post any news pertinent to Florida's Turnpike, and keep the Communications Director informed of news items of interest
  • Attend weekly construction progress meetings as necessary to fully understand current project issues
  • Develop and produce information materials – fact sheets, PowerPoint presentations, photos, graphics, etc.
  • Work with construction project managers to identify and help to manage information related to construction issues
  • Serve as liaison between Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) and the community especially in active construction zones
  • Develop and plan public outreach campaigns prior to start of construction projects
  • Coordinate and schedule large mailers related to construction projects
  • Research and help resolve issues pertaining to Construction, Maintenance, Traffic operations and other departments at FTE, as assigned
  • Research, proof for accuracy, and seek approval to respond to a variety of media requests and elected official inquiries in a timely manner
  • Coordinate and participate in public meetings with various neighborhood groups or other FTE stakeholders as assigned
  • Develop special educational and promotional materials for presentation at meetings and conferences
  • Create or translate into Spanish Turnpike and SunPass fliers, advertisements, websites, brochures, etc.
  • Organize and support various special events, groundbreakings, grand opening ceremonies and public meetings as assigned
  • Serve as project leader for special public relations projects
  • Research, write and vet various social media posts for FTE (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)
  • Research and write in AP style for website and various newsletters
  • Participate in web design or web development as necessary
  • Reply to emails and letters from the public on behalf of FTE, FDOT and the Governor's Office
  • Respond to general public complaints and resolve issues
  • Assist FTE Executive leadership as requested

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Public information and/or communication-project work experience
  • Must have excellent verbal, writing, and presentation skills
  • Ability to follow protocols, established guidelines and writing styles
  • Ability to work beyond standard business hours
  • Strong time management skills and high attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge and experience with news media
  • Ability to work well with the public and interact effectively with all organizational levels, including agency staff, senior management, executive leadership, board members, community leaders, client, and city/county/state representatives
  • 5+ years of experience
  • Must work effectively with teams and demonstrate initiative
  • High attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of computer programs, graphic skills, website including experience with Microsoft office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher, Creative Suite, InDesign
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to exercise a high level of discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information
