JOB TITLE: Women Empowerment Consultant / Syria Peace Building Programme

REPORTS TO: Senior Advisor for Peace Building in Syria
The World Council of Churches (WCC) is an ecumenical fellowship of churches founded in 1948. It brings together 350 member churches from all over the world, including Orthodox churches, Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran and Reformed denominations, to promote Christian unity in faith, witness and service for a just and peaceful world.
BACKGROUND:
Through its programmatic work on Syria, the WCC emphasizes the essential role of gender equity and empowerment of women in achieving peace building and sustainable development in Syria in line with Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) and other relevant SC resolutions on Women, Peace and Security which request full integration of women in peace and political process, and demand full and equal access of women to decision making positions in their respective countries.
Realizing the strong aspirations of Syrian women from different political backgrounds to play constructive roles in the future of Syria, and admitting the needs of Syrian grass -roots organizations of strong technical support in areas of gender and women empowerment in order to be capable of fulfilling the Syrian women aspirations, the WCC, in cooperation with its partners, is committed to advance the agenda of women empowerment and women’s and girls’ equal rights, combatting discriminatory practices, challenging the roles and stereotypes that affect inequalities and exclusion and providing women with needed expertise and training.
Building on the results achieved and the lessons learned the goal of the WCC is to ensure that the Syrian women will lead, participle and benefit equally from the peace process and any future political settlement in Syria, and assure that the Syrian women will live a life free from all kinds of discrimination and violence.
With that background, the WCC seeks to recruit a Women Empowerment consultant, reporting to the Senior Advisor for Peace Building. The Consultant will work in close collaboration with the programme’s team, as well as with relevant external partners.

Additional information: The contract will be issued in Geneva, but the consultant can be based anywhere.
