Hi, we're The Browser Company and we're building a better way to use the internet.
Browsers are unique in that they are one of the only pieces of software that you share with your parents as well as your kids. Which makes sense, they're our doorway to the most important things — through them we socialize with loved ones, work on our passion projects, and explore our curiosities. But on their own, they don’t actually do a whole lot, they’re kind of just there. They don’t help us organize our messy lives or make it easier to compose our ideas. We believe that the browser could do so much more — it can empower and support the amazing things we do on the internet. That’s why we’re building one: a browser that can help us grow, create, and stay curious.
To accomplish this lofty task, we’re building a diverse team of people from different backgrounds and experiences. This isn’t optional, it’s crucial to our mission, as we need a wide range of perspectives to challenge our assumptions and shape our browser through a bold, creative lens.
With that in mind, we especially encourage women, people of color, and others from historically marginalized groups to apply.

About the Role

As a Data Engineer, you’ll ensure that our data systems can scale with a growing user base and team so that everyone can access the data they need to focus on the highest-impact work and iterate quickly.

The Data Team works in a wide range of areas, including logging code and abstractions, data pipelines, internal tools, product analytics, company prioritization, and growth forecasting. We value a multidisciplinary attitude and want team members who are excited to dive into whatever needs to get done.

Overall you will...

  • Across the company, ensure the most useful data is accessible to the right people at the right time, so they can make informed decisions

  • Build, maintain, and socialize data tools, making sure data is easy to access and interpret

  • Ensure that logging, pipelines and data models are efficient and reliable

  • Create and maintain tools and processes that protect data privacy

Within 1 month you will...

  • Get onboarded onto the team with an onboarding buddy

  • Get familiar with the tools in our data stack, both within our codebase, and third-party tools such as Segment, dbt, BigQuery, and Mode

  • Start making improvements to our data infrastructure and tools

  • Attend a number of onboarding presentation on how we give each other feedback, the phases a startup goes through, our technical strategy, and more

Within 3 months you will...

  • Understand company priorities and recommend updates to our data infra, models, and tools that can help us reach our goals more quickly

  • Propose and implement efficiency and reliability improvements across our data stack

  • Develop company-wide guidelines and documentation for how to use data tools

  • Be familiar with our app architecture and deployment process, so that you can communicate with engineers about the product development lifecycle

  • Be involved in data team discussions about our use of data across the company and how to uphold our standards

Within 6 months you will...

  • Be a subject matter expert for other teams on logging and spinning up new data sources

  • Propose and develop data tools that help teammates across the company access the data they need to make informed decisions

  • Provide insights for decision-making on infrastructure investments, balancing scrappiness and rigor

  • Be trained and interviewing new teammates for roles at The Browser Company

  • You have 4+ years of industry experience in the data field

  • You have experience building and maintaining data pipelines that combine existing off-the-shelf tools and custom infrastructure

  • You’ve built robust internal data tools before, such as scalable infrastructure for data access, experimentation, and reporting

  • You care about the content as well as the shape of data; getting data into the right place and format is satisfying specifically because of the information it unlocks

  • You’re motivated to unblock the team and facilitate access to data in the most pragmatic way — you know when to reach for BigQuery connections in Excel and when to build well-documented infrastructure complete with Terraform resources

  • You’ve built and scaled data models, leveraging orchestration tools like dbt and adapting your approach as data volume moves from millions to billions of rows

  • You're excited to work in a fast-paced startup environment, and you embrace testing and learning quickly to refine technical systems and internal processes alike

Compensation and Benefits

With our flexible compensation model, employees have the ability to design their compensation according to their needs. People join startups for different reasons and we want to be accommodating and flexible to everyone’s lives. Every candidate approved for an offer receives two options:

The first offer is a lower salary with a higher equity package

The second is a higher salary with a lower equity package.

Candidates can choose either option or anywhere in between the two on a sliding scale. The annual salary range for this role is $150,000-$300,000 USD, and the actual salary range offered will vary based on experience level and interview performance.
In addition to a competitive salary and equity package, we provide every employee with the following benefits:

  • comprehensive benefits package, with employee medical, dental, and vision premiums covered at 100%

  • 401k plan

  • flexible vacation policy: on average, our team members take between 15-20 vacation days plus federal holidays (holidays vary by location)

  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave

  • $1,500 USD home office stipend

  • Employees based in the US also receive free annual memberships to One Medical, Talkspace, Teladoc, and HealthAdvocate
