Electrical/Automation Design Engineer (m/f/d). The Engineer will be responsible for carrying out the duties of the Engineering department, including design, research, prototyping, engineering documentation, estimating and process improvement. The successful candidate will report directly to the Team Leader and collaborate with electric, software, design, purchasing, service and workshop/assembly teams on new and customized design projects. The Electrical Design Engineer within the Material Characterization research and development (R&D) group at Thermo Fisher Scientific will participate in the design development, has ownership of electrical components, software and system design, functionality and managing their life cycle.
This position will require the ability to work independently, prioritize goals, and follow through on tasks to completion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Programming PLC with automation system software to control machines
Design and programming of industrial PCs, e.g. with regard to 21 CFR part 11
Design and implement software system (up to level 3) in C/C++/VBS on Windows platform
Design electrical control circuits incl. creation of circuit diagrams, cable lists and control cabinet planning
Evaluation and documentation of hazards and risks (Safety-relevant controls EN ISO 13849, Safety of machinery - Electrical equipment of machines EN 60204))
Preparations for equipment certification according to international guidelines e.g. Machinery Directive, EMC Directive, Low-Voltage Directive).
Participate in new product development and introduction (NPD) projects
Estimate time requirements of designs and work to meet deadlines
Maintain documentation of all work carried out to preserve the intellectual property of the company
Make technical design decisions
Identify and promote product, procedure, and process improvements
Identify external collaborators to drive innovation and accelerate time to market
Review and approve engineering change orders
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline with 5+ years of applicable design experience, or a Master degree with 3+ years of applicable design experience
In addition, 5+ years of experience in electrical and software design for extrusion machines preferred
Extensive experience with Siemens TIA Portal WinCC V16 Prof and Step7 (SCL, FUP, C/VB)
Proficient in C/C++/VBS language for Windows based software UI system development
Knowledge about control of OS functions like user management, timeserver, access permissions, network administration
Experience with common Electrical CAD platform, such as WSCAD or EPLAN
Knowledge and experience with PID control algorithms implementation and optimization desired
Selection of electrical components and handling of discontinued components
Design of machines according to ATEX guidelines advantageous
Understanding of mechanical design drawings desired
Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
Good knowledge of written and spoken German/English is required
Frequent collaboration with other engineers working within cross-functional teams
Clearly present designs, specifications, and results in a group
Communicate detailed technical information both verbally and non-verbally such that it is easily understood by staff with varying degrees of technical proficiency
Facilitate progress on multiple projects on a daily basis through meetings and discussions
