Shanghai Huaer Collegiate School Kunshan is seeking to appoint a Director of College Counseling for an August 2021 start.

Shanghai Huaer Collegiate School Kunshan employs a blended Chinese and
American curriculum that combines a drive for academic excellence within a
whole child education program designed to nurture healthy, globally aware young
adults. Learning with Huaer Collegiate truly is a process. Each stage of education
prepares the scholar for the next, from preschool through Grade 12 and onto
college. Scholars who spend their entire school life with us benefit from the
continual and consistent support that only a progressive curriculum can provide.

During the compulsory education stage, the school fully implements the Chinese National Curriculum,
endorsed by the Ministry of Education. Using the national curriculum as a guide, the school introduces
a highly interactive and learner-centred teaching model that is also aligned with the leading American
curriculum standards such as Common Core, Next Generation Science and International Society for
Technology in Education. Aligning these curriculum standards provides an immersive bilingual learning
environment that cultivates interdisciplinary and integrated learning in science, technology, engineering, arts
(humanities, physical education, visual arts, music, drama), and mathematics (iSTEAM). This allows scholars
to achieve academic excellence while at the same time echoing the concept of whole child, personalized
education and teaching.

At Huaer Collegiate, teachers are committed to whole child education and therefore, play multiple roles. They should not only be able to impart knowledge, but also be able to have heart-to-heart talks with scholars and act as their academic and life advisors. These responsibilities put forward a deeper level of requirements for teachers, such as the compatible vision for whole child, personalized education, rigorous attitude, outstanding academic ability, and love for education and children. We put these talented individuals into an open and collaborative environment and build a team of teachers that combines innovation and continuous improvement.

The Director of College Counseling will coordinate all aspects of college placement and career guidance services. This includes the following:

  • Meet with individual students and parents regarding post-high school placement.
  • Publicize relevant information regarding post-high school placement (dates of college admissions tests, scholarships, etc.)
  • Conduct college and career guidance advisory groups. Inform students and parents of college options and provide resources so that families can make the best possible decision.
  • Facilitate students’ college application processes.
  • Help students identify their strengths and the relevance of these attributes to their future.
  • Develop and update college counseling publications distributed to students and families dealing with all aspects of the college admissions process, financial aid, test-taking practices, and other topics.
  • Serve as the case manager for each student and monitor students’ academic progress.
  • Initiate parent contact when appropriate.
  • Maintain detailed counseling records for designated students including college application information, scholarships applied, college acceptance and scholarships received.
  • Prepare reports and analyze data on courses and credit eligibility, college acceptance statistics, and scholarships received by students.

Therefore, every educator will be expected to contribute actively to the whole life of the school, working with scholars beyond the classroom in advisory, co-curricular and residential programs. We are building a diverse, enthusiastic and highly supportive community of teachers who are committed to academic excellence and the creation of opportunities for scholars to take charge of their learning with daring optimism and drive.

We are seeking to appoint a highly talented faculty to cover all areas of the school and who can share in our ethos - enjoying collaboration and learning, embracing cross-cultural adaptability, and sharing a resilient and ethical passion for developing an outstanding college preparatory school. International or US primary English curriculum experience is preferred. Endorsements or specialisms in ESL, Reading & Literacy, Special Education or Gifted & Talented will be advantageous.
