Position Information
The Virginia Department of Health seeks applicants for the physician leader and CEO of the multi-locality Cumberland Plateau and LENOWISCO Health Districts.
The Cumberland Plateau (CPHD) and LENOWISCO Health Districts (LHD) are two of thirty-five health districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia under the Virginia Department of Health.
Although technically two districts, there is one combined leadership team to enable the districts to function as one health district. The two Health Districts encompass the city of Norton and the counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Tazewell, and Wise. The CPHD and LHD, which provides services from 7 office locations, serve an estimated combined population of 188,501 throughout both rural and urban environments.
The mission of the CPHD and LHD is to protect the health and promote the well-being of all people in the Cumberland Plateau and LENOWISCO Health District.
The Physician Leader and CEO is a state employee and reports to the Deputy Commissioner for Community Health Services.
The Physician Leader and CEO works closely with local officials, community leaders, health care providers, faith-based groups, and other state, regional, and local agencies. You will provide public health leadership for the districts as well as leadership and management support for a wide range of public health programs and services including population health, chronic and communicable disease intervention, environmental health, family planning, immunizations for vaccine-preventable diseases, maternal and child health, nutrition, disaster preparedness & response and community engagement based programs.
Travel within the district and occasional overnight travel are required. This position is a critical hard-to-fill role and eligible for a signing bonus or front-loaded leave.

Physician license or eligibility in VA required, experience with administration and management, public health experience at either the local or regional level, experience with population health leadership, and must be eligible for credentialing with managed care organizations/insurance companies.
Preferred QualificationsMPH or equivalent training and experience. Board Certification in Preventive Medicine.
Special RequirementsEmployment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check and E-Verify.
