The Sr. Electrical Designer will be a member of our LEA (Linde Engineering Americas) engineering team in Tonawanda, NY, reporting directly to the Electrical Design Section Leader. They will be responsible for preparing designs and layouts for capital projects. This position works under direct supervision following established routines and standing instructions. You will be expected to prepare detailed drawings and layouts of process plant electrical distribution systems for engineering, manufacturing or construction projects. Specifically, this candidate will be required to have extensive knowledge in power distribution (15kV, 5kV, 480V & 120V), cable tray design, grounding practices, sizing of wire and conduit, control & instrumentation wiring, fiber optics, winterization (heat tracing) and lighting & utilities.

This group is ultimately responsible for wiring existing and new plants pursuant to the specific project scope developed by the leadership team. Thus, a hands-on electrical designer is ideal for this role.

  • Ensures successful completion of assigned tasks within time and cost restraints
  • Works as a member of design team to prepare plant or equipment layouts
  • Works with engineers to convert basic design information into working drawings
  • Investigates problems and requirements of projects and develops and implements appropriate solutions
  • Checks design packages for conformance to project definition, design standards, codes, completeness, safety and quality
  • Ensures design packages conform to project definition, design standards, codes, completeness, safety and quality
  • Collects notes, sketches and verbal instructions to complete designs
  • Interfaces with internal and external customers
  • Interface with remote Linde Engineering design entities
  • Operates computer aided design equipment and software to perform design activities
  • Ensures that designs comply with design and safety standards
  • Prioritizes work, may plan and schedule design activities of other team members
  • Training and oversight of newer professionals
  • Learns and follows established work processes
  • Works with Control Systems Engineering in developing Schematic Wiring Diagrams

  • 10+ years (min.) electrical design, engineering or drafting experience
  • Knowledge of industrial codes, standards and practices
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD 2019 or later
  • Familiarity with SmartPlant 3D and COMOS desirable
  • 3D modeling of cable tray
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time to support project tasks and construction


  • Associates degree in electrical design, engineering or similar field.
  • 15 or more years of experience in electrical design and electrical wiring of large-scale projects.
  • Extensive experience with AutoCAD 2019 (or later) including 3D modeling capabilities
  • Familiarity with database drawing software (i.e. Siemens COMOS, Bentley Autoplant, SmartPlant)
  • Familiarity in working with related equipment (Switchgear, H.V. transformers, Motor Control Centers, etc.)
  • Leadership ability, when required, to direct other design resources internally and externally
  • Good working knowledge of The National Electrical Code (N.E.C.)
  • Ability to read, interpret and extract relevant information from electrical one-line diagrams, schematic wiring diagrams and P & I diagrams
