TransAlta owns and operates the Keephills and Sundance power plants. The Plant Engineering team is responsible for the continued safe and reliable operation of the plants, including supporting immediate plant concerns, developing long term maintenance and capital strategies and driving turnaround scope.
TransAlta is currently looking for a temporary (15-months) Electrical Engineer. The purpose of this position is to provide electrical engineering support, specifically related to Electrical, Protection & Controls for the plants, with a focus on routine support and project implementation. The position will also support the development asset management strategies. The individual in this role is expected to conform to the TransAlta’s Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) and ensure performance of all engineering activities is held to the highest standard.
Provide day-to-day technical support for operations, maintenance and project management teams for the full inventory of powerplant electrical and controls equipment.
Identifies and communicates the resolution of technical issues arising from detrimental operating conditions and equipment conditions.
Performs equipment and system risk assessments and condition assessments.
Provides technical support for projects, turnarounds and forced outages.
Provides technical input into the asset management process
Understands and complies with the technical documentation management processes and standards
Performs and coordinates engineering design work
Understands and adheres to budget for functional area
Leads compliance efforts within the electrical engineering (AESO, WECC, etc.), including ensuring compliance to existing requirements and implementation of new standards
Ensure all work is performed safely and within TransAlta’s policies, procedures, standards and collective agreements
Alberta registered Professional Engineer.
8+ years working experience in power industry with a strong focus on Electrical equipment and Protection and Controls.
Experience with transformers, switchgear, breakers, protective relays, arc flash studies, motors, high voltage, medium voltage and low voltage AC distribution, low voltage DC distribution.
Experience with AESO Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) such as PRC-005, FAC-008, etc.
Experience with instrumentation & control systems is preferred but not a requirement.
Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting and analyzing equipment performance problems and making recommendations for improvements.
Demonstrate a high standard for safety.
Knowledge of the practices and processes associated with project management, project engineering and engineering design in the power generation industry.
Knowledge of document control practices
Knowledge of management of change practices.
Capability to understand and articulate complex technical issues to both a technical and non-technical audience
Must be able to provide emergent site support if required.
Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
Must be able to work safely and effectively in a team environment, as well as with minimal supervision.
Must have physical endurance to withstand exposure to noise, dust, heat and cold.
Must have a valid class 5 Alberta driver's license.
