Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Engineer Manager to join the Wattstopper Team in Carlsbad, CA. The Successful candidate will manage company R&D projects, intellectual property, engineering resource talent and design standards. Ensure that new designs meet marketing requirements and can be produced within the cost constraints and on schedule. This position oversees specialized engineering functions such as mechanical, electrical, product safety, quality and testing. The Engineer Manager organizes staff in areas such as work scheduling, communications, employee relations, performance counseling and reviews.

What Will You Do?

  1. Manage company technology research and development initiatives.
  2. Lead cross-functional product development teams, partners and outsourced vendors.
  3. Manage project schedules and key project milestones. Communicate status at weekly and quarterly reviews.
  4. Ensure product proposals are adequately described by MRD and EPS documents.
  5. Establish procedures for maintaining high standards of product design to ensure that products conform to established customer and company quality standards.
  6. Lead investigations of emerging technologies, providing insight into better and more advance products, features and benefits for customers.
  7. Responsible for improving engineering productivity, reduction of lead times and controlling operating costs and maximization of daily throughput.
  8. Handles hiring, promotional and salary recommendations disciplining employees, addresses complaints and resolving problems.
  9. Establishes and maintains employee performance standards. Works with employees to set goals and define development needs. Provides ongoing, timely feedback and periodic formal performance evaluations, per company guidelines.
  10. Develop a lean organization with strong key people and a mindset of continuous improvement.
  11. Ensures engineering support for operations, including clarification of equipment, assembly requirements and raw material requirements.
  12. Responsible for managing company intellectual property, designs, patents, through direct involvement with research and development teams.
  13. Lead intellectual property assessments, working between engineering teams and legal counsel to identify and secure invention opportunities while protecting existing IP.
  14. Lead initiatives to create, update or maintain product research, development and engineering standards.
  15. Provide support to marketing function, assist with product design requirements, review of competitive products, assistance with reviewing technical literature and help with determining our customer's product needs
  16. Performs other similar and related duties as required.

Basic Qualifications


  • B.S. in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronic Engineering.


  • Minimum 5 years experience in engineering, product development electrical/electronic engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years managing people and teams on successful engineering, research or development projects

Preferred Skills

  • Masters in Engineering preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage others.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, development and motivation to staff to achieve superior results and accomplish overall business objectives.
  • Participate in staff selection/interview process.
  • Recruit, hire, and oversee training of staff.
  • Excellent skills in project management, demonstrated ability to make timely and effective decision, handle multiple priorities and effectively delegate responsibilities to ensure high quality service is delivered on time and within budget.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills and be able to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization. Must be an effective listener, able to maintain focus extract necessary information and validate understanding of the information. Able to create effective reports, presentations and business correspondence.
  • Must be able to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Must have solid business acumen and understanding of a variety of functional areas within the business.
  • Strong computer skills, proficient with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, e-mail and meeting management software. Ability to use internet and web based resources efficiently and effectively.
