Finance Business Analyst - Corporate Finance

Job Description

Job Introduction

A new opportunity has become available for a Corporate Finance Business Analyst at the BBC within Corporate Finance – primarily focussing on its commercial activities.

The Corporate Finance team is at the forefront of change for the BBC and actively identifies and delivers initiatives that ensure the BBC attains its strategic goals and successfully adapts to the continuous evolution of the sector it operates in. It is a centrally-based Finance team that reports directly into Finance management and that is relatively small in scale but large in impact. This gives the team a dynamic mentality and a focus on development for team members – ensuring people work on a diverse range of projects, gain excellent senior exposure, and take advantage of opportunities for both on- and off-the-job development.

On the commercial side, the team’s particular areas of expertise within the BBC are technical commercial assessment (return criteria, risk/reward balance, etc.), commercial benchmarking (identifying and evaluating comparable media peers), valuation analysis (including modelling techniques such as Discounted Cash Flow) and financial project management (particularly projects, reviews and processes that span BBC areas).

The nature of the team means that the role will be high profile within the BBC, regularly dealing with senior stakeholders and cutting across different parts of Finance and beyond (including Strategy, Policy, the Director-General’s Office, etc.). The team has a strong track record of former members moving into key, influential roles across the BBC so is good for people looking for a change in career direction.

Role Responsibility

Finance Business Analysts within the Corporate Finance team drive best value for the BBC from its commercial activities through:

  • Collaborative relationships across the BBC’s finance leadership teams and commercial subsidiaries
  • Acting as critical adviser to appraise, challenge and resolve key business initiatives and issues
  • Providing assurance and delivering recommendations and solutions, based on high quality, concise and sound financial and strategic analysis
  • Influencing BBC decision-makers in shareholder oversight of the BBC’s commercial subsidiaries, promoting transformational change, and solving complex pan-BBC challenges
  • Managing projects that progress the BBC’s commercial strategy, adopting a pan-BBC collaborative approach that can often require playing a coordination role across multiple teams
  • Referencing and championing external and BBC-wide knowledge of best practice in financial analysis, ways of working or driving commercial performance (including benchmarking analysis, industry monitoring and liaising with external advisers when required)

Are you the right candidate?

A background in financial analysis (including an ability to read and interpret company accounts) is critical; a professional accounting qualification may be helpful but is not a prerequisite. What's important is that you can demonstrate your experience in as many of the following areas as possible:

  • Media or more generic commercial knowledge – this could be from working in a media company, experience in assessing commercial investments, being an adviser specialising in the media sector or being an adviser with more generic corporate finance experience, such as in valuation or running comparable company analysis when working for a financial consultancy firm or investment bank or when managing Government shareholdings
  • Financial modelling techniques – experience is desirable for the role but can be developed otherwise, particularly valuation analysis such as Discounted Cash Flow, familiarity with discount rates, etc.
  • Project management abilities – scoping of projects from the outset; establishing clear timelines and milestones; managing multiple processes; and prioritising/escalating issues to ensure timely delivery
  • Influencing and persuasion skills – building strong relationships and influencing a broad range of stakeholders, including those in executive leadership positions; working collaboratively across organisational boundaries; awareness of effective communication techniques (experience in creating PowerPoint presentations and/or writing assurance/assessment reports for executives is desirable)
  • Analytical skills – ability to collate, interpret and simplify complex data in Excel; evaluating information critically and quickly with a sense of curiosity and solid attention to detail. Identify key drivers and recognise patterns or trends in order to provide high-level analysis or make high-level adjustments, even when faced with limited or imperfect information. Ultimately driving and influencing decision-making through providing assurance, assessment, opinion and recommendation
  • Problem solving – identifying key objectives and resolving challenges on a timely basis with a drive to improve the status quo; communicating next steps to ensure management take informed decisions
  • Drive and resilience – a self-starter who can manage your own work, prioritise competing demands on time, run projects independently, and keep people you work for appraised of progress
  • Development – clarity about your career direction and a desire to progress in the business and take on challenging projects to develop yourself and others
