Because it’s the best-run businesses that make the world run better and improve people’s lives.
ABOUT US (TEAM)
Maintaining security is a constantly shifting task, and we need to respond with continuous learning and research. The portfolio of SAP Security Research contains those topics that we believe are most important for SAP’s security future.
SAP’s vision to secure business is built on 3 ideals: Zero-Vulnerability, to harden the software by eliminating vulnerabilities, Defensible Application, to enable the software to identify and prevent attacks, and Zero-Knowledge, to make any theft of data useless through encryption.
Considering these aspects, SAP Security Research covers the following focal areas: Anonymization for Big Data, Secure Internet of Things, Software security analysis, Open-source analysis, Deceptive application, Applied cryptography, Quantum technology, and Machine Learning as enabler for the next generation of security.
PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
This internship is based in the SAP Labs France Research Lab, in Sophia-Antipolis. The work will be performed in the context of the Research Program “Security & Trust”, under the “Defendable Application” topic. This topic aims at protecting applications by directly reacting to attackers performing active information gathering, as well as attackers who already found a way in (for example thanks to a successful credential theft through a phishing email).
SAP has developed an approach consisting in detecting malicious activity thanks to a set of deployed or virtual honeytokens, followed by a diversion phase where the attacker is re-routed to a honeypot. From the code perspective, the honeypot is a clone of the original application, meaning that attacker’s activity can be monitored to discover the exploitation of unknown vulnerabilities.
The goal of this internship is to explore the security relevant logging requirements for web applications, and to develop methods to make sure that the application and the honeypot environment will have the capacity to monitor different attacks. We will focus on the actual application logs (rather than the network logs) and the security related events that occur during runtime.
EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS
The expected work is to get familiar with the security and audit logging requirements, working on a large corpus of web application source code to analyze the usage of logging utilities and log statements, making observations on the good and bad practices. Depending on the research process, we also expect the intern to work on the development of an automated logging mechanism (e.g., based on Aspect Oriented Programming) that will help developers to record the security relevant events.
