Purpose of the job

The lead mechanical architect is accountable of the vehicle arrangement definition and the mechanical interfaces management across the Product Family (PF). He/she relies on mechanical architects working on clearly defined and separated technical scope. He / She ensures the team development on mechanical architecture knowledge, bring them up to a more functional view by aiming standardization.

Within the Product Family, he/she is in charge of the delivery of mechanical architecture scope relying on his team of mechanical architects, by:

Ensuring that requirements, resulting from functional architecture analysis and affecting vehicle mechanical architecture, are well cascaded, understood and implemented in the design

Defining vehicles arrangement, their related layouts and volume allocations for the main sub-systems

Defining a mechanical architecture to comply with vehicle performance requirement such as acoustics and vibration, aerodynamics, industrial design and passenger flow, human factors and ergonomics, passenger and crew evacuation, vehicle gauging, vehicle dynamics, weight, etc. …

Leading mechanical concept definition and architectures harmonization across the Product Family

Managing variability of the design with a standardization and modular approach

Leading the team to manage mechanical interfaces of sub systems on vehicle

-
Ensuring compliance with Center of Expertise (CoE) directives, with Metier guidelines and with Product Family directives

-
Verifying mechanical architecture deliveries

-
Managing the product priorities, the workload and the budget

-
Escalating issues and lessons learnt to the head of vehicle architecture of the Product Family and to the head of CoE mechanical architecture

-
Attending as a permanent stakeholder to the CoE mechanical architecture committee meetings

Key responsibilities

Team Capability Development:

-
Assess mechanical architects capability according to competency matrix

-
Liaise with CoE to identify capability gap and set a development plan accordingly

-
Bring up the mechanical architects to a more functional view and to a system concept approach (system engineering thinking)

-
provide mentorship and training to the mechanical architects under his/her supervision

Product Development:

-
Perform the analysis and deliverables for the bids by maximizing re-use of existing building-blocks

-
Ensure the execution of mechanical architecture according to Product Family roadmap

-
Capture and understand the Product Family requirements and ensure consistent application

-
Review and approve mechanical architecture deliveries of the product family

-
Lead the governance of mechanical interfaces maturity on his/her Product Family and ensure the zone review methodology is well deployed

Deliver a QCT governance within the function and a risk assessment on his/her workpackage

-
Ensure solutions quality (in the sense of “state of the art”) and compliance to the requirements

Standardization

-
Ensure standardization and harmonization within Product Family

-
Re-use building blocks, solutions, guidelines and tools from the CoE mechanical architecture library

-
Ensure a modular approach for mechanical design to manage Product Family variability

-
Align the change management around the configuration baseline strategy of his/her Product Family

-
Incorporate lessons learnt in continuous improvement and ensure proper application of best practices

Workpackage (WP) and costing Management

-
Execute mechanical architecture activities strictly according to an agreed WP and budget

-
Always provide a view on the current and planned workload of his/her team

-
Ensure local time sheet approval

Ensure cooperation with COE Mechanical Architecture Team

-
Work closely with the CoE mechanical architecture, ensuring the capacity/capability development

-
Produce the necessary Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and consolidate a dashboard to report efficiently on his/her progress and hotspots.

Secure continuous development of methods and tools for continuous productivity and efficiency improvement - Liaising with CoE Mechanical architecture

Support building blocks standardization including mechanical interfaces standardization.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelors or master’s Degree in mechanical engineering

Relevant experience required

-
Minimum of 10 years engineering experience in a similar domain - Railway Domain

-
Experience in leading a small engineering team

-
Very good working experience in an international environment

-
Experience of working across many different disciplines

-
Budget, project and planning management experience

-
Experience on business strategic areas and able to implement strategy, initiatives in his/her domain of expertise
