Versent is a rapidly growing Cloud Consulting organisation, specialising in AWS. We have offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Singapore and have grown to over 270 people in just four years! We are kicking off a brand new team to focus on new product(s) we are building, like we did with our first one www.stax.io. Most of the team is formed but we are looking extra experienced Engineers that can join to learn, share and grow with the team.

Lead Engineers are responsible for their squad/team from a development perspective, working closely with the Iteration Managers, Principal Engineers and Principal Consultants throughout the project/product lifecycle to ensure that sprints are setup for success and that the team is never working too hard or lacks the understanding in their card

  • Tech Spikes are setup and run efficiently for the team
  • Any detail/architectural patterns are in place and understood by the team before entering a sprint
  • Work with the developers during rituals to ensure active and effective communication is taking place between team members
  • Cards for the team are articulate, well defined and are testable
  • They are expected to spend roughly 50% of available time on team based activities and the other 50% of the time working on cards


The team will be using a mix of tools and frameworks that include Python, Node.js, Go and Typescript all within a AWS native space. Its never going to be 100% fixed on the tech, so having an openness to learning is a must have trait as well as the ability and experience to set the technical direction - not just drive the train, but lay the tracks.

The core focus for us, above all the tech, is having a great bunch of people working together with everyone learning and sharing along the way.


Requirements

  • Our Lead Microservices Engineer exhibit the following behaviours;

    • Can lead development squads effectively

    People wanting to become a Lead Microservices Engineer at Versent have the following skills;

    • Background and experience in one (or more) Object Oriented, modern programming language (Java, NodeJS, GoLang, Ruby, etc...)
    • Understanding what getting something done done looks like (doc, testing, continuous improvement of process)
    • Have experience with the AWS ecosystem (S3, DynamoDB/RDS, etc...)
    • Understands and follows consistent code styling guidelines (linting or similar)
    • Can demonstrate what discipline looks like in microservices codebases
    • Ensuring that the quality of what the team produces is at the set standard
    • Ensure team members are sticking to the defintion of done on a card and not doing more then planned (or working outside the context of a card)
    • Are comfortable and happy to present at internal meet ups and tech talks

    Example Tasks for a Lead Microservices Engineer;

    • Participating in agile rituals (stand ups, planning sessions, retros, etc...)
    • Working on stories and tasks
    • Conducting Code Reviews (PR's or Pair Programming), can also lead PR and PP Sessions
    • Conduct and Participate in Technical Spikes
    • Take Ownership of their card moving to "done, done" which may include some DevOps, Security and Testing Work
    • Can articulate and document architectural patterns in AWS and how best to implement them
    • Presenting at Industry and Versent Meetups/Tech talks on a regular basis
