Summary

The Manager, Sales & Use Tax Compliance reports directly to the Senior Manager, Sales Tax and is responsible for managing all aspects of the sales and use tax compliance, fuel excise tax compliance and business support functions at Martin Marietta Materials including: ensuring sales, use and excise tax returns/refund claims are accurate and filed timely, reconciling GL accounts, reviewing capital purchases for tax compliance, supporting corporate initiatives from a sales tax perspective, addressing vendor inquiries and developing and mentoring sales tax compliance staff.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, develop and mentor senior tax analysts
  • Ensure sales, use, GST, VAT and excise tax returns are filed timely and accurately
  • Maintain sales tax registrations and recommend methodology for registration if when needed
  • Manage relationship with outsourced compliance provider
  • Key sales tax technical prime for corporate initiatives
  • Regularly communicate with management regarding projects and tasks
  • Review work performed by the senior analysts
  • Develop good working relationships with personnel within the Finance, Purchasing, Shared Services, Finance Managers and other operations teams
  • Facilitate training sessions to non-tax corporate and operations personnel
  • Ensure field, AP, customer, and vendor questions are addressed by the team accurately and timely
  • Maintain and expand taxability matrices for equipment purchases and exemption certificates
  • Provide exemption certificate validation for the field and internal audit
  • Prepare/approve journal entries and ensure that all G/L accounts are reconciled in accordance with calendar
  • Integrate acquired companies seamlessly into Martin Marietta’s compliance process
  • Constantly evaluate the compliance process to identify and implement process enhancements to maximize efficiencies while not impacting accuracy
  • Ensure credit carryforward items are minimized and monetized timely
  • Work with Tax Technology to ensure Vertex is configured to accurately calculate all sales and use taxes and assist with system testing as needed
  • Create and utilize compliance calendars and task lists to ensure all returns and tasks are completed timely
  • Maintain knowledge of sales and excise tax law
  • Participate in professional organizations
  • Manage sales, use and excise tax minimization efforts through identifying overpayments, working with consulting firms, filing refund claims and updating systems to ensure overpayments are minimized
  • Perform administrative tasks in a timely manner
  • Other duties as assigned by Sr. Manager Sales Tax

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; Master’s Degree preferred
  • CPA or CMI required; Public accounting experience a plus
  • 10+ years of dedicated multi-state sales tax experience
  • Demonstrated high level of project management specifically relating to sales tax compliance ideally in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience successfully managing and mentoring staff
  • Working knowledge of Vertex O or similar sales tax decision making software is preferred, along with diverse enterprise system knowledge or adaptability
  • Highly motivated by process improvement and project management
  • Ability to motivate, inspire and challenge sales tax personnel to reach their highest potential.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Good working knowledge of multi-state sales tax rules and regulations. Ability to apply these rules to transactions in a complex industry
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong accounting, tax research and analytical skills
  • Must be able to communicate complex sales tax issues both verbally and in writing.
