The Manager, Product Software Engineering supervises a group of Software Engineers.

He / she is accountable for the performance and results of his area of responsibility, which may span across several engineering teams.

He/ she supports the engineering teams where his / her reports are assigned, moderating discussions, supporting decision-making on matters of execution and priority setting, either with team members or peers, including from other departments such as Ops, Quality, Product Management, Professional Services.

He / she is responsible and accountable for applying and improving agreed working methods, adhering to quality and process standards, and generally provides direction based on general policies and management guidance, recommends modifications to operating policies.

He / she maintains a capacity plan, facilitating resource reassignment and priority change. He / she proposes plans and priorities to address resources and operational challenges and objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational responsibilities

•Activities (responsibility) :

  • Directly assists Architects, Product Managers, peers and Software Quality Managers in the assessment of the feasibility of new product concepts ahead of the start of new release cycles.
  • Secures all teams where his / her reports are assigned can properly report on progress.
  • Accountable of the outcomes agreed with their reports in their respective teams.
  • Responsible and accountable for the proper application of agreed working methods, processes and quality standards
  • Represents software development outside of R&D, is responsible for communication on software development matters to internal or external customers.
  • Cooperates closely with software development managers at other sites
  • Cooperates with his/her colleagues (R&D, product management, professional services, IT operations, ...) to secure that the software developed is delivered in time and the expected quality.

  • Up to date capacity plan for own staff
  • Accurate and up to date progress status for teams in scope

•Can take the following decisions :

  • Allocation / assignment of reports

People management

•Activities (responsibility) :

  • Leads the group of engineers reporting to him/her, striving for excellence in execution, customer and employee satisfaction. Connects them to the right people in the company to get things done. Sponsors their participation in various transformation initiatives.
  • Responsible for hiring, setting of objectives and in measuring achievements of the software engineers.
  • Responsible and accountable for the Learning &Development plan for reports. Coaches software engineers and helps them to develop their skills. Defines performance improvement plans and manages lay-offs when necessary.
  • Develops talents in his / her team and promotes their career development in coordination with the R&D management team. Supports senior management in HR related activities as appropriate.

  • Regular development conversations with all reports
  • L&D Plan and execution
  • Accurate rating, grading and compensation balance

•Can take the following decisions :

  • Hire, rate, propose for promotion, engage in disciplinary action

Budget Management

•Activities (responsibility) :

  • In cooperation with the Engineering Director and the R&D PMO, the Manager, Product Software Engineering plans & tracks expenditures in his / her scope, such as tools, workplace, consulting and sourcing, in order to ensure the cost effective and efficient operation of the teams.
  • He / she prepares the budget for their reports and their teams, in cooperation with peers.

•Expected outcomes (accountability) :

  • Structured budget input
  • Transparent tracking

•Can take the following decisions :

  • Initiate purchase orders for their reports or teams

OTHER DUTIES

•Activities (responsibility) :

  • Cooperate with various company initiatives, as requested.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Master or Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related subjects

Prior experience:

  • 15+years of Software Engineering practice, of which half in a manager’s position, with a recent span of control of around 15 to 20 people
  • Experience with international management, including working with offshore teams-Recent experience in successfully building a SaaS, from scratch or with legacy migration.
  • Up to date technical (e.g. SOA, design patters, Azure stack, ...) and process (Scrum, Agile testing, CI/CD, ...) knowledge and practice. For information, our technical stack comprises .Net, SQLS, React, OData, ...We are not looking for an expert, but a people manager in the first place
