At Intercept, our mission is to build a healthier tomorrow for patients with progressive non-viral liver diseases. Intercept’s lead product, Obeticholic Acid (OCA), is a first-in-class farnesoid X receptor (FXR) agonist. OCA, marketed under the brand name “Ocaliva®,” is approved in the U.S., EU and Canada for certain patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a rare autoimmune liver disease. Ocaliva® was the first product to be approved for PBC in over twenty years and our team is proud to have been pioneers in providing the first second-line treatment option to patients with such critical need. The Ocaliva® launch in 2016 also marked Intercept’s successful transition from a development-stage company to a fully integrated commercial organization: thousands of patients across the globe have received access to Ocaliva®.
In February 2019, Intercept reported positive topline results from the Phase 3 REGENERATE study of OCA in patients with liver fibrosis due to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). REGENERATE is the first and largest Phase 3 study in NASH – a chronic disease that threatens the lives of millions of people in the U.S. alone. By 2020, NASH is expected to overtake hepatitis C as the leading cause of liver transplants in the U.S. Currently, there are no available treatments for NASH, and Intercept is among the leading companies focused on the disease.
Based on the positive results from REGENERATE, Intercept intends to file for regulatory approval in the U.S. in the third quarter of this year, with a European filing following in the fourth quarter. This is an exciting time for Intercept, as the organization prepares for a potential approval and launch in NASH. As part of this effort, Intercept is beginning to build a new commercial organization, and this opportunity in U.S. Market Access will play a pivotal role in preparing the company for the successful anticipated launch of OCA’s second indication.
The Senior Director (SD), Market Access, Strategic Accounts is a key member of the U.S. Commercial Team and is responsible for partnering with internal stakeholders to develop strategic payer account tactics to ensure optimal national/regional Commercial, Medicare Part D, Managed Medicaid and Government coverage. The successful outcome is streamlined and transparent coverage resulting in unimpeded patient access to therapy. The Senior Director (SD), Market Access, Strategic Accounts will lead the team of payer account leaders, our Directors of Strategic Accounts (DSAs) to work with various payers across the country.
We will continue our work to grow in PBC and also prepare for a potential world-class launch in NASH. For NASH the Senior Director, along with the DSAs, through their account plans, they will engage proactively with payers to enhance knowledge of NASH disease state ahead of a potential PDUFA date. Upon our potential approval in NASH, the Senior Director, Market Access, Strategic Accounts will need to deliver through great planning and execution the following:
+ Gain rapid and broad coverage for the target patient population
+ Ensure the right patients can access OCA
Additional strategic leadership responsibilities include payer contracting engagement/execution, HCEI, payer value proposition, supporting the efforts of Market Access Marketing and Regional Access Team objectives. Leadership of the DSA team will involve extensive coordination with Marketing, Commercial Operations, Regulatory, Legal, Compliance, Finance, IT, external consulting groups, and vendors.
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
+ Develop and execute Market Access strategy to gain access for Intercept Pharmaceutical’s brand through product placement on Commercial, Government and other targeted Managed Care plans.
+ Lead the effort toward building out and expanding our long-term executive level account relationships with targeted payers.
+ Lead cross-functional teams with key internal stakeholders to ensure that channel and payer strategies are implemented and tracking to established goals.
+ Execute Market Access payer contracting strategy.
+ Lead all efforts to deliver the OCA payer value proposition.
+ Maintain excellence in team leadership, partner management, contracting, compliance and quarter end management (SOPs, work instructions, processes, governance).
+ Ensure that needs of other functional areas such as Finance, Marketing, Commercial Operations, IT are met though contracts and data agreements with partners.
+ Proactively identify market trends, key Market Access customers and opinion leaders on a continual basis.
+ Attend key trade meetings (ex. AMCP), POA’s and sales meetings.
