The Stuttgart Technology Center (STC) was founded in 1989. With the Stuttgart Laboratory 1 (SL1) and the Stuttgart Laboratory 2 (SL2), the STC is a home for two important research and development offices in this network. As part of the European organization of Sony (SEU), the STC plays an important role in the worldwide network of the Research and Development Center (RDC) Sony. STC hosts also the Automotive Entertainment Solutions Europe (AESE) and Automotive Semiconductor Sales & Marketing (ASSM), two departments that belong to the Semiconductor and Electronics Solutions (SES) division. Furthermore, the Technology Partnerships Europe (TPE) and Intellectual Property Europe (IPE) departments are located in the STC.

Stuttgart Laboratory 1 conducts research in the areas of "Computational Imaging, Perception Systems, RF Communications, Artificial Intelligence and Speech & Sound Processing."

Below you can find some past examples for the different working fields, so that you may well imagine the diversity of topics you would contribute to as Internship / Master Thesis student in our team:

1) Internet of things (IoT):

  • Novel ultra-low power transceiver architectures: investigation of digital-rich architectures for IoT standards, like BLE, LTE-M/NB, or 802.11ah
  • High efficiency transmitter concepts: investigation of novel digital pre-processing and calibration algorithms

2) Wireless LAN Standardization:

  • Next generation Wireless LANs: Analysis, and optimization of novel PHY and MAC architectures in context of 802.11ax, 802.11ay, and 802.11be (EHT)
  • Investigation of analog and digital beamforming techniques for applications such as mm-wave or spatial reuse in multi-user MIMO scenarios

3) Indoor localization:

  • Semi–automatic map creation for indoor localization: investigation of sequence-based fingerprinting for unique estimation of location and heading
  • Evaluation of indoor localization systems: operation and evaluation of state of the art indoor localization systems, e.g. cameras with integrated V-SLAM
  • Sensor calibration: implementation and efficiency study of offline and online calibration techniques for mobile device sensors

4) Radar:

  • Design & characterize innovative antenna topologies in the mm-wave frequency band; develop and optimise antenna measurement techniques (incl. simulations)
  • Signal processing topic: localize radar targets in the 2D or 3D space with a high resolution, evaluate the target speed profile, track and predict their movement
  • Machine Learning (ML) topic: identify target types (classification) by machine learning algorithms on radar signatures/measurements. Angle-of-arrival and detection by ML
  • Localization and Mapping: use radar detections to localize the ego-platform and construct representations of the environment

5) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR):

  • Interference mitigation investigations: mutual interference mitigation of different LiDAR systems; self-interference mitigation, due to multipath propagation
  • Investigation of different LiDAR concepts: combinations of different scanning (e.g. 2D or 3D), emission (e.g. flash or modulated) and detection (e.g. SPAD or SiPM) strategies

Prerequisites:

  • The positions are only available for master degree students of any University within the EU, currently in their last years of study, without a finalized degree
  • We expect good mathematical skills and depending on the topic, good know-how in digital communications or radar technology, and related signal processing
  • Furthermore, it is desirable that the applicant has hands-on experience with MATLAB and/or Simulink
  • Good communication in English (written and spoken) is essential
  • Finally, in our projects it is key to be self-motivated and creative, to work focused and self-dependent and bring passion and joy for research and innovation

  • If your studies only require less than 6 months of internship, it is possible to combine the mandatory internship with a 3-month voluntary internship
  • If your studies do not require any internship, it is sometimes possible to arrange for a 3-month voluntary internship, which mainly consists of hands-on tasks that require less familiarization with the topic
  • It is typically possible to follow-up an internship (of 3 to 6 months) with a Master Thesis
