Job Description

  • Salary Package: Level A, Step 6 (PhD) from $91,991 to $98,588 p.a., plus 9.5% employer’s Superannuation
  • Appointment Type: Full-time, fixed term for one year
  • Macquarie University (North Ryde) location

The Role

We are seeking an outstanding early career astronomer working in astrophotonics or higher esolution Doppler spectroscopy, to work with us to build ultra-precise wavelength calibrators based on laser-locked Etalon cavities.

Ideally, candidates will have experience in the development of photonic devices and instrumentation for astronomy and in high resolution optical or infrared spectroscopy for exoplanet detection with the radial velocity technique. A strong background in optical and mechanical engineering, vacuum technology, optical fibers as well as integrating and observing with astronomical Echelle spectrographs is desired. Experience working in optics labs as well as observatory environments is helpful. The successful candidate will be required to work equally well independently and in a team, and show good communication skills to work efficiently in our multi-national collaboration. The candidate will work on integration of the wavelength calibrator, coordinate work with partners in the US and Germany, and will prepare and conduct observatory runs for the testing and commissioning of our calibration unit. The candidate will work with world-leading exoplanet detection facilities and large spectrographs in the visible and infrared spectral range. The position also offers excellent opportunities to develop strong collaborative ties to leading Doppler spectroscopy groups

About Us

The MQ Department of Physics and Astronomy has three main research areas: Photonics including Biophotonics, Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Quantum Physics. In the Australian Government's Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative, Quantum Physics research at Macquarie received a perfect ranking of 5 in all rounds to date. Macquarie University also hosts a node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems. Essential Selection Criteria:

  • A relevant doctoral degree in astrophotonics or astronomical instrumentation
  • A demonstrated ability to produce high quality publications in international journals;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with optical raytracing software and CAD engineering software
  • Experience working in optical labs, integrating optomechanical instruments
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop novel solutions for astronomical instruments
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with students, staff, and the community.

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  • Experience observing with optical telescopes.
  • Knowledge of extraction software for high resolution astronomical spectra
  • Experience with wavelength calibration of Echelle spectrographs
  • Experience with laser spectroscopy
