Principal Software Engineer - Tracking

The tracking team is responsible for collecting user behavior data from the Zalando web store and mobile shopping apps. Our goal is to empower Zalando as a company to take the right decisions and help understand the needs of millions of active customers.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will design, simplify, and improve the services for collecting, correlating, and managing customer journey data for all of Zalando. You will be ensuring the operational readiness of the systems while improving cost efficiency and provide guidance to a mixed team of Frontend, Data, and Backend engineers and help them with their vision to empower the information-driven revolution with a tracking infrastructure everybody loves. Furthermore, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a high-scalable microservice architecture processing 10s of thousands of events per second.

WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED

• You will be responsible for the collection and data pipelines that enrich and move the data to internal and external partners.
• You will interface with product specialists and stakeholders to gather requirements so that you can deliver exactly what is needed.
• You will choose emerging technologies and approaches to create high-performance data processing solutions that scale.
• Challenging our status quo and helping us define best practices for how we work by designing data-intensive applications.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

• Good understanding of Big Data technologies (e.g. Kafka, Flink)
• Experience in designing high throughput and/or streaming system
• Around 5+ years proficient experience in at least one JVM based programming language and strong experience with AWS and/or Kubernetes
• Some experience in Python and JavaScript would be a plus
• You enjoy solving complex problems, and are able to think out of the box. You possess an eye for code quality, testing, software architecture and performance.
• Hands-on experience with production systems and are comfortable working in collaboration with different engineering teams.
