Occupational Summary
Direct programming for the Duke Human Rights Center at the Kenan Institute for Ethics. Lead a set of complex and independent activities involved in planning, organizing, conducting research and programming for the Kenan Institute for Ethics Human Rights Center. This position will also lead the Last Girl Child Sex Trafficking Advocacy Lab with faculty, staff and students.
Work Performed
Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Human Rights Center at KIE. Lead faculty advisory board directing their effort and input as needed. Direct the Last Girl Advocacy Lab.
Design, develop and oversee day to day programming at the Human Rights Center at KIE establishing a robust research agenda.
Lead conferences, workshops, and policy briefings for academics and practitioners on campus and at other sites. Build and lead networks of faculty and practitioners, identifying strategic opportunities and collaborations and facilitating outputs.
Oversee preparation of all center communications including regular newsletter, brochures and stewardship reports. Draft and disseminate research outputs. Represent the Institute and the Center at conferences and workshops developing professional networks and to share ongoing research.
Lead the Last Girl Advocacy Lab. Lead a year round student/faculty teams working to understand human displacement and human trafficking in cities across the U.S. Recruit partner organizations in the 12 research cities. Design and deliver two summer week long therapeutic interventions for newcomer youth. Includes management of student team of 12 and Durham public schools teacher team of 12. Design, deliver and analyze assessment in collaboration.
Conduct field research with student/faculty teams both nationally and internationally.
Conduct site interviews with service providers as well as life story interviews refugees and trafficking victims. Draft reports and publications based on research.
Identify internal and external resources to support ongoing work of the center. Prepare applications for grants and contracts to include development of budgets; administer center grants in accordance with University policies and sponsors requirements regarding records, reports, controls and conditions governing expenditures of funds. Serve as key steward for donor relations, preparing any stewardship reports.
Draft working papers, conference reports, policy briefs, op-eds and other translational documents at the direction of faculty or independently. Publish scholarly articles.
Supervise two programming staff. Supervise contract team of data analysts that will code and analyze both narrative and quantitative data. Direct various personnel actions including but not limited to hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
This position reports to the Director of the Kenan Institute.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education/Training: Work requires a MA degree in a field related to ethics.
Experience - departmental preferences:
1. Minimum 2 years of independent international ethnographic field research experience as well as 2 years experience leading complex student/faculty research teams abroad.
2. Position requires at least 2 years’ experience managing programs for at risk youth in underserved communities.
3. Position requires expertise in trauma and mental health assessment and policy intervention.
4. Position requires proficiency in quantitative and qualitative analytic software (STATA and atlas.ti) and Arabic and Spanish language skills.
5. Position requires outstanding writing skills, experience drafting scholarly and policy publications.
