Position Description

Position Purpose

The Project Engineer is the technical lead and subject matter expert for the Plant of the Future Automation projects.

Facilitates the development of Plant of the Future initiatives and projects from idea/concept, through the design, Proof of Concept, production trials, FAT, Commissioning and Qualification, to full working system that meet CHEP Global safety and quality standard and can be deployed across CHEP’s Global Service Centre Network.

This position will lead the implementation of the technical skills and Technology Transfer & Training (TT&T) for Plant of the Future initiatives and projects, ensuring service centres have the correct technical skills, systems and processes for efficient running and maintenance of automation equipment.

Major/Key Accountabilities

  • Support Programme Manager to develop project plans and successfully execute them in accordance with established schedule, cost and performance standards. 
  • Support Programme Manager to develop Capital Expenditure Authorization documents to include cost estimates and project justification.  
  • Manage and direct development of innovation work by suppliers. Lead technical reviews of proposals and support at suppliers’ site when required.
  • Ensure the latest technologies for design and testing are being used and taken advantage of. Specifically, the building of a digital twin model to allow offline testing of Programming and sequencing. Also incorporate appropriate use of AR, AI and ML technologies.
  • Ensure all Human-Machine interfaces are evaluated and tested to ensure the maximum ease of use and safety of all personnel.
  • Manage all technical aspects associated with capital project execution to include equipment layout and specifications development, vendor selection and requests for quote, purchase order generation, contractor selection, on-site supervision during the installation and start-up of equipment, and proper tagging and accounting of new equipment. 
  • Maintain strict fiduciary controls, managing capital budgets, and accurately forecasting monthly spending
  • Ensure that all necessary safe work practices are adhered to by both CHEP and contractor personnel. 
  • Ensure that all necessary construction and environmental permits are obtained prior to work beginning. 
  • Track and report progress as required against project deliverables. 
  • Coordinate training of on-site personnel as needed for system operation and maintenance. 
  • Ensure proper handoff of completed projects to include as-built drawings, maintenance and operations manuals, and spare parts lists.
  • Ensures every project for plant automation equipment has a robust Technology Transfer & Training (TT&T) program in place that ensures the right level of skills are in place to operate and maintain the technology.
