Job Description


Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the position of Fixed Term Radiation Oncologist, Auckland District Health Board. The Regional Cancer and Blood Service is located at Auckland City Hospital - New Zealand's largest tertiary hospital.  The Radiation Oncology Department sees approximately 3,500 new patients per year. Auckland City Hospital is a major teaching and research centre with strong links with the University of Auckland.

The successful applicant will join a team of 16 Radiation Oncologists and will be responsible for one or more sub-specialty areas. You will work in the designated tumour stream(s) and be involved in the clinical care and development of your subspecialty tumour site group. Subspecialty interest and experience at least in two of the following tumour streams is highly desirable: breast, genito-urinary, gastro-intestinal. Experience with VMAT, IGRT and SABR is welcome. This is initially a full time 6 months fixed term role.

Many of our protocols involve combined radiation and chemotherapy, and we work closely with the medical oncologists and haematologists; who are also based in the service. The successful applicant should demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and providing high quality multi-disciplinary care. A strong academic record, broad experience in Radiation Oncology and interest in research are highly desirable.  The successful applicant should contribute to improvement initiatives as part of multi-disciplinary team. 

The department has 6 linear accelerators, Pantak kilo voltage unit, 2 CT simulators, HDR brachytherapy, ARIA electronic patient management system, Pinnacle and Raystation treatment planning system as well as MIM Maestro software. Clinics are mainly based at Auckland City Hospital with peripheral clinics held at Counties Manukau DHB, Waitemata DHB and Northland DHB (Whangarei Hospital).

The department offers comprehensive cancer services including Paediatric Radiation Oncology, Brachytherapy and Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy.  There is well supported Registrar training Programme with eight Radiation Oncology Registrars. The department is actively involved in clinical trials including those from the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) in the UK. The department is constantly aiming to implement innovative radiation treatment and improving standards of patient care.

Fellowship of the RANZCR Faculty of Radiation Oncology and vocational registration, or eligibility for vocational registration, in the specialty of Radiation Oncology with the NZMC are mandatory requirements for this position.
