Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join the EMEA Finance Team based in Central Brighton.

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the financial operations of Avalara’s European entities in UK and Belgium.

The individual will be a key Finance representative to other departments and support them through cross-departmental projects, specifically those which further the development of operational processes which enhance the robustness of financial reporting.

A key responsibility will be the delivery of accurate and timely financial reporting under US GAAP on a monthly basis.

Job Duties:

  • Plan, organize and implement accounting processes, policies and procedures to ensure compliance to US GAAP and local tax requirements.
  • Champion best-in-class internal processes and controls related to financial operations and ensure these processes and controls are documented to a high-standard.
  • Analyze, review and validate key reports and financial results to ensure accuracy of financial information prepared by the Company.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other departments to ensure appropriate communication across the business.
  • Challenge the operational status-quo across departments and work collaboratively with Product, Engineering and Compliance to help build scalable processes.
  • Deliver high quality documentation around applicable accounting policies and their impact on the EMEA business unit.
  • Understand and document the impact of GAAP adjustments (US GAAP / FRS102 / Belgian GAAP) across the EMEA businesses.
  • Support the preparation of a monthly reporting pack and supporting schedules for EMEA, accurately and to schedule.
  • Take responsibility for the preparation of key sections of monthly management reporting to the EMEA Leadership team.
  • Assist in the statutory audit process.
  • Manage and participate in other finance related projects, as requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Maintenance and control of the general ledger, as well as month-end, quarterly and year end accounting procedures and reporting and variance analysis.
  • Has a combination of best-in-class experience and worked in an environment where “rolling up your sleeves” is expected.
  • Has knowledge and proven practical application of accounting frameworks and applying the SOX controls framework.
  • Experience managing Financial Operations.
  • Comfortable investigating and articulating the rationale for operational performance trends.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively at all levels, and across organizations and geographies.
  • First rate problem solving and analytic abilities.
  • Strong process and project management skills. Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and activities to meet tight deadlines with a high level of accuracy.
  • Experienced user of accounting software; NetSuite desirable.
  • Advanced level experience with Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

Education/Experience and/or Training:

  • Recognized accounting qualification.
  • Top Tier Practice desirable or demonstrable high responsibility role exposure in industry.
  • Able to demonstrate relevant commercial insight and how it has influenced change in a business.
  • Supervisory/managerial experience.
