As Director of R&D xray tubes & generators, you will develop and innovate livesaving technology with your global team. Our components are used in diagnostic xray, computed tomography (CT), and Image-Guided Therapy (IGT). In this role you will lead a team through all phases of bringing a new product to life (with quality and on time) and then continually keeping the product’s quality and low improving over the products life. The phases including research and advanced development of new technologies that enable new clinical innovations with our products, the design and development of new and updated products and life cycle management.
Our team is utilizing Agile development methodologies to be closer to our customers, more responsive to their needs, more transparent to our progress, and bring speed and predictability to our releases. As a leader in an agile team, the traditional R&D leadership skills of people development & technology road-mapping are still vital. Just as important are the skills of being a supportive leader who can help the team grow technically and as a development team overall, mentor the team to find solutions, and inspire the team to be close to the customer & always at their best (which for us is not a fixed level, but a constantly improving best).

Be a key member of the global R&D Management Team and determine, in consultation with the Management Team, the department’s objectives, policies, processes and budgets on short and long term, make sure that the organization can meet the objectives and ensure that the roles and responsibilities are put in place.
Formulate and implement long-term vision/direction/strategy: steering the group to add maximum value to the business in the future. Content-wise inspire and contribute to cross-organizational strategy and project teams working on innovation themes and breakthroughs.
Manage capabilities of the department; to develop and maintain a long-term view on the required competences and knowledge to introduce new technology. Ensure that there are adequate resources and tools at the proper time, is responsible for the technology and architecture in the department, and is responsible for maintaining and improving the department’s knowledge and expertise.
Ensure appropriate personnel management practices regarding recruitment and selection, adequate staffing, remuneration, performance appraisals, education and training, and management development policy.
Ensure an engaged, innovative, and inspiring working environment in the department by motivating, challenging, and coaching the department 's employees towards growth, manage and optimize the innovative climate, stimulating entrepreneurship and driving engagement
Be co-responsible for achieving operational plans, guide team members and group leaders and with the program-level leaders, ensure the optimal allocation of personnel to the projects and effective project management, ensure excellent project execution by constantly optimizing project delivery practices in the department to exceed customer expectations.
Cooperate with relevant parties outside of the department. Work across the borders of the own department – e.g. formulate strategies or project proposals across department borders, cooperating with other department heads, programs and the business. Establish a network with relevant players; scientific relations outside of the department and with the business - on all topics, and actively using this network to obtain input on technological developments, identifying trends and opportunities.
To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience :
Technical Degree extended with MBA
15 years relevant experience in product development in an international matrix organization with at least the last 7 of those years leading teams
Proven ability to plan and then deliver complex products on time & in budget with expected quality levels
Experience with designing for high-reliability, manufacturability, and low cost
Experience in creating and successfully driving multi-year technical roadmaps
Experience leading research and advanced development projects to provide a technology funnel for next generation product development
Experience creating and working within department personnel and budget plans
Excellent analytical skills
Experience leading, inspiring and coaching teams to become high-performance teams
Ability to follow and define processes using lean engineering/principles and ensures a relentless drive on continuous quality and efficiency improvements
Ability to lead international, cross-functional, and virtual teams
Attitude and mind-set to drive bold changes (business culture and personal mind-set) through the organization
Experience/knowledge in agile development or /and lean development
strong communication and stakeholder management skills
High energy level, eager to challenge status quo and reach ambitious goals
Able to influence activities outside R&D scope e.g. finance, marketing, operation, service
Proficient in English, German would be a plus
In this role you will lead the approximately 100 person global team designing and developing x-ray tubes and generators, reporting to the Senior Director R&D Imaging Components.
