Job Description

Senior Software Developer
Position at Canadian Banknote Company, Limited
Did you know that the Canadian Bank Note Company produces more than bank notes? We do! We design and develop a wide variety of products and systems for our clients, and one of our growing divisions is our Lotteries team. CBN Lotteries has been developing world class lottery systems for over 30 years, successfully competing internationally with much larger companies. Every member of the division plays a vital role in our success and is continuously presented with opportunities to help augment the global reputation the company already enjoys. We are looking for an energetic individual who loves to write code, who is not afraid to try to do the impossible, who strives to find creative solutions, and who will be recognized for their contributions. If you are looking for a demanding and rewarding career with a strong, stable, global company, we look forward to hearing from you.
What does our Lotteries division do?
So much! Our integrated team of specialists develop, deploy and operate complete lottery and gaming systems. Our solutions include online, retail and mobile sales channels, and the entire administration, network, communications and security infrastructure required for a comprehensive system. Our lotteries division is global, and our government clients are international.
What’s really cool is that most of the funds that are generated by the lotteries allow governments to provide funds for great local causes including children’s hospitals, amateur athletics and educational initiatives.
What will the Senior Software Developer do?
+ You will need to possess a strong and varied background in software and systems development, as our systems are complex. They are also changing – as an industry leader, we are always seeking ways to evolve, so we will be seeking your input into how we continue to improve our products. With your keen interest in new technologies, you will play a key role in the architectural design of the next generation of our systems, where a strong foundation in OOD is paramount. You will join our team of highly skilled developers in the full implementation of new components. Lottery players are becoming more and more tech-savvy, and it is essential that our lottery products keep up with the pace to allow us to expand our well-respected position in the global gaming industry.
+ What languages should you know? The core of our system is Java, but it doesn't stop there. We select what we believe to be the best tools for each component of the system. The list of tools currently in production includes Apache, Tomcat, XML, SQL, JPA, BPM, SOAP, REST, Swing, Android, PHP, JavaScript, HTML, PERL, JSON and more.
+ Our group is small but productive. We make extensive use of Agile practices and technologies, from the design phase right through to production. At the core, Continuous Integration and automated test suites ensure that our SDLC is efficient and allows us to make frequent changes to our systems in production with confidence. Your abilities with tools such as Ant, Git, Maven, JUnit and TDD will be put to work. Your soft Agile skills – sprint planning, user story creation, code review participation, etc. - will bring new insights to our development process with a view to continuous refinement.
+ As suppliers of lottery systems to foreign governments, there is an obvious requirement that our systems be fault-tolerant and highly available. You will appreciate that troubleshooting and maintaining existing systems is also critical. Some of your time will be spent working in these areas, sometimes under pressure and significant time constraints.
Our ideal candidate will have a degree or diploma in secondary education in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, with 5+ years of experience developing software systems or products using a variety of technologies. We are looking for a versatile individual, with many of the skills and experience outlined above, but also one who will bring along additional skills which will serve to broaden the scope of our collective competencies. The goal is to improve our team and, as a result, improve our processes and our products. There may be a need to travel, so availability to travel both domestically and internationally is a requirement of this position. Eligibility for Secret Level security clearance issued by the Government of Canada is mandatory.
