JMT is seeking a motivated individual who desires increasing responsibilities in designing, managing and marketing Water Resources Engineering for a variety of projects. The successful candidate will be well-versed across the water resources discipline with demonstrated design and management experience in drainage and stormwater management design, modeling, and permitting with the supporting capabilities to perform a variety of design tasks in the civil engineering and environmental permitting field. 

This position will help grow the water resources discipline as part of multi-discipline engineering office with strong transportation resume and clients. Successful candidates will be expected to effectively oversee, perform and manage a variety of water resource related engineering design and permitting projects. There is a significant need for a candidate that understands the existing Virginia stormwater regulations, has experience on stormwater and drainage design for Virginia transportation projects, and can assist local municipalities with MS4 permit compliance and reach their TMDL goals.

Responsible for engineering design using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments with limited supervision. Acts as a technical advisor to less experienced engineers.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Develop drainage design and stormwater management design in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools.
  • Responsible for stormwater management, erosion and sedimentation control / NPDES permitting on transportation and other development projects
  • Conduct watershed studies and hydrologic and hydraulic analysis
  • Prepare Contract Documents including Plans, Specifications and Cost Estimates
  • Design and inspect traditional and innovative green stormwater infrastructure and SWM BMPs in both urban and rural environments
  • Coordination with contractors, outside consultants, government agencies, and JMT staff from multiple locations and technical disciplines
  • Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope
  • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects
  • Virginia Professional Engineer License or the ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • 8-15 years of experience in general civil design, with a minimum of six (6) years of experience in water resources engineering on Virginia projects
  • Experience with Virginia’s Runoff Reduction Method and be able to evaluate projects using it to determine required pollutant reduction and which BMPs should be used to meet the requirements
  • Hydraulic Modeling experience using HEC-RAS
  • GSI / Stormwater Management design experience
  • Erosion and Sediment Control design experience
  • Experience working with local clients at the county and state level
  • DEQ certification in E&S and Stormwater inspection and or plan review required
  • Have established contacts with various local, state, and federal agencies preferred

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 90% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work and some travel is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
