Why do we have this role?

Practical Law is a time-saving online legal guidance and know-how solution. It is relatively new to Australia, despite its deep history in the United Kingdom and the United States. Practical Law Australia's Banking and Finance module was launched in 2018 and has been continuously expanding ever since. We are looking for an experienced Banking and Finance lawyer to help develop new resources and topic areas that will help lawyers navigate the complexities of a wide variety of commercial banking and finance transactions.

About Practical Law

Practical Law empowers law firms and legal departments to act with confidence by relying on up-to-date practical guides, precedents, and legal updates that help them navigate their way through legal issues and focus their deeper research. Practical Law's content is created by a high calibre team comprised of ex-top tier and senior in-house lawyers with substantial practising experience.

Key responsibilities

As a Senior Writer, Banking & Finance, you will develop and write premium Practical Law content to be used by practising lawyers. You will also work collaboratively to help achieve the ongoing success of the Banking & Finance and the wider Practical Law teams.

In this highly collaborative role, led by practice area head writers, you will use your experience gained from legal practice to:

  • Plan, research, draft, edit and update premium quality Practical Law resources for the Banking and Finance practice area, including practice notes, standard documents and clauses with drafting notes, checklists and legal updates.
  • Review and critically assess colleague's resources as part of the editorial process.
  • Keep up-to-date with the law and monitor the latest legal, practice and market developments.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with legal practitioners in the market to ensure content remains relevant and reflects current market practice and is tailored to meet customer needs.
  • Support the sales and marketing teams. This may include participation in sales demonstrations to potential customers or working with the marketing team to develop webinar content.

Key attributes:

To be successful in this role you will need to meet following requirements:

  • Admitted to practice as a lawyer with at least 5 years PQE gained at a top-tier or highly regarded mid-tier firm. Your experience will include working in a transactional Banking and Finance team or in-house counsel role.
  • Background and career experience in:
    • Commercial banking and finance transactions, drafting and negotiating documentation. This experience may have been gained in any practice area, including general corporate finance, commercial real estate finance, construction finance, leveraged finance, acquisition finance, debt capital markets, securitisation or derivatives.
    • A good working knowledge of taking security over various asset classes in Australia.
  • The creativity to conceive resources to be written, and evaluate drafting ideas and approaches.
  • An innate curiosity, interest and passion for learning about and writing on legal topics relating to banking and finance.
  • Excellent project management, research, technical, drafting and communication skills.
