At BWXT NEC Nuclear Services, you will work on technically challenging projects as a member of the Systems Engineering team in support of on-power refueling systems for CANDU reactors. You will be immersed in the design, development and test of multi-disciplinary projects related to automated and semi-automated fuelling machines, robotic systems, and maintenance tooling for CANDU reactors and other related systems. Systems engineers participate at the initial stages of project development with a strong focus on requirement development, compliance and traceability. Systems Engineering work focuses on integration of mechanical, electrical instruments and software to achieve turnkey product solutions for our customers. You will execute in a close collaborative environment with other engineering disciplines on continually and rapidly evolving designs. This opportunity will test your ability to lead both technically and procedurally.
Lead the design, development, and delivery of safety and non-safety related systems for fuel handling applications, specialized tooling and process plant systems in the nuclear industry.
Responsibilities include assisting the functional leadership of systems engineers and technologists, configuration management and engineering tools, technical documentation, and product verification and validation activities. This position will also be responsible for implementing process simplification and streamlined practices from the industry.

Specific responsibilities and accountabilities include:
Planning and Project Integration
Facilitate the preparation of proper plans and schedules (level 3) with individual contributors. Take ownership of the cost/schedule commitments of your team and your staff.
Assist the functional manager in the review and approval of proposals and estimates (max 300 hrs).
Create and enforce the use of Task Definition Forms (TDFs) for work assignments.
Provide leadership and direction of design activities in conjunction with the technical counselors.
Provide a detailed level of task surveillance to ensure adherence to scope.
Measure and drive job scope control with individuals to improve overall performance.
Provide a detailed level of task surveillance to ensure adherence to schedules.

Ensure the PMO is given timely updates.
Inform the PM of schedule misses before they impact the milestone or delivery date.
Review schedule baselines to ensure that the PM understands the plan.
Verify that the schedule activities are complete and that the expectations of the technical leader are achieved for each planned activity.
Provide a detailed level of budget surveillance to ensure adherence to cost and schedules.
Measure and drive job cost control with individuals to improve overall performance.
Review budgets to ensure that the Commercial Operations have entered the correct budgets.
Enforce budget adherence within the team.
Maintain team and individual allocation targets.
Lead the development, standardization and implementation of design processes to improve the operating efficiency of the Engineering unit. Development of the design guidelines for their knowledge areas.
Document the processes and procedures which provide effective training and guidance documents for the Engineering staff.
Assure compliance and adherence to processes and policy requirements. Enforce procedural use and adherence during approval steps.
Verify the quality of the deliverables.
Plan, lead, schedule and complete internal continuous improvement initiatives.
Participate in resource and manpower planning with functional manager(s).
Assist in the recruitment and interviewing of candidates.
Write and conduct performance reviews in cooperation with the Functional Manager. Prepare and rollout individual goals for team members annually.
Coach individual contributors to achieve best in class results.
Assist in the on-boarding training and development of staff new to the business.
Key success factors are design activity management, motivating a diverse group of staff, and leading proper decision making through influencing, actions and setting of expectations.
Development of a flexible skilled workforce that can respond to the demands of the market customer. (For example: The teams should not be dependant on a single resource).
Review and approve weekly JDE timecards.
Work closely with the Functional Manager, PMO and individuals to ensure that there is proper communication of job status.
This position requires frequent interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross-functional internal teams. The team leader must have excellent communication skills, be energetic and a problem solver.
Conduct bi-weekly team meetings to ensure accurate work planning, share design best practices and encourage team collaboration.
Attend weekly leadership meetings with FMs and TLs.
Proactively identify project and technical risk, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the business.
Lead individuals/teams in determining mitigation plans.
DO YOU QUALIFY? WE ARE SEEKING:
BASc or MASc in Engineering.
Licensed by PEO.
Minimum 5 years experience in Systems Engineering, with minimum 2 years’ experience within the business is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to lead small to medium scale design teams.
Experience with a broad range of interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, interface design, systems integration and test.
Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: Design or analysis, tooling design, D2O system design, design support of complex site equipment, control system interfaces.
Familiar with Engineering process including design, cost control, and schedule control, engineering change control (ECC).
