The Centre for Comparative Medicine Research is a rapidly expanding, AAALAC International accredited, service unit of the LKS Faculty of Medicine at HKU. This Animal Welfare Veterinarian II is an expansion of the current Animal Welfare & Veterinary team and will be actively involved working with a complement of 5 full-time and 2 part-time veterinarians in clinical veterinary care of research animals, training of researchers, as well as compliance checking and animal welfare monitoring.
Applicants should possess a university degree in Veterinary Medicine which is registrable under the Hong Kong Veterinary Surgeons Registration Ordinance Cap. 529, with at least 3 years’ relevant postgraduate experience in veterinary practice. They should have interest in developing a career in comparative medicine and laboratory animal sciences; be able to work independently with initiative and sound judgement; and possess good interpersonal, communication and computer skills. Previous experience in and/or knowledge of animal welfare practices and principles would be an advantage.
In addition to performing clinical rounds, the appointee will monitor animal welfare and keep track of researchers’ compliance with animal ethics committee guidelines/approved protocols, local legislation/code of practice and AAALAC International standards; inspect animal facilities and research laboratories; provide advice, support, education and training for researchers/animal care staff; and assist in protocol and safety review. He/She will be required to perform weekend duty rosters with the vet team and work irregular hours during emergencies. On-the-job training and ongoing continuous professional development opportunities will be provided.
