The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) Directorate is responsible for laboratory space, administrative space, infrastructure, campus landscape, planning, and design, and construction management at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research.
The Technical Support Engineer is responsible for:
Maintaining logs and records of equipment operations, and understanding and operating computer based building automation systems (BAS)
Analyzing results and may develop test specifications and electrical schematics
Preparing technical reports with recommendations for solutions to technical problems
Performing and assisting HVAC technicians in troubleshooting HVAC systems and controls
Providing systems operations data and trend logging reports, and managing BAS access and privileges for technicians based on their job responsibilities
Work is performed indoors and out-of-doors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards
Occasionally working beyond normal duty hours, including weekends and holidays
Contributes to the overall success of Operation and Maintenance Department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
Possession of a Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in engineering or a related scientific discipline, in addition to specialized courses in DDC control and building automation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
In addition to education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years related experience
Experience in building control systems, construction, building maintenance and mechanical systems, including relevant experience troubleshooting and repairing Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems. DDC sequence and graphical programming
Ability to read and understand control drawings, electronic schematics, electrical diagrams and construction drawings
In-depth knowledge and ability to diagnose and repair malfunctions of electronic, electrical and mechanical systems and digital and pneumatic controls
Experience with basic diagnostic equipment, including multimeters
Knowledge of advanced electronic, pneumatic and mechanical principles
Knowledge of Computers and various operating systems and software. Basic network configuration capabilities
Experience in safety practices in the trade
Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical people
Ability to routinely lift and carry up to 30 lbs.
A full range of physical motion is required with the ability to tolerate prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching, climbing stairs, climbing ladders on a regular basis
Must possess a valid driver’s license with no more than 3 demerit points in the previous twelve (12) months or five (5) demerit points in the preceding thirty-six (36) months as determined by the Leidos Biomed Use of Government Owned or Leased Vehicles Policy
Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
Experience with AutoCad software
Experience in a wide variety of complex electronic controls, sensory and recording systems used in research
Knowledge of integration of Lon Network Controllers with Niagara Java application control engine (JACE) requiring use of Java desktop environment software and graphical interface software, Workplace Pro/Work bench
Knowledge of programming DDC controllers with DOS-based line programming and digital management software, including Windows-based block programming of Lon Network Controllers with Workplace tech
Knowledge of BacNet, modbus and Lon communications protocols and devices
