The role

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and energized Senior Materials Technician to join a leading infrastructure consultancy and contribute to the growth and development of a business with a reputation for technical excellence and strong client relationships. Reports to

Resident Engineer

Primary purpose of position

Plan, direct and control all activities related to the quality and acceptance control of materials for the supervision of the Mtentu River Bridge. Concrete materials shall be the main focus in this regard.

Key Responsibilities 

With a minimum of 15 years of experience working as a Materials Technician on SANRAL and/or Provincial roads projects, you will play a key role in:

• Prioritizing, scheduling, performing and documenting field and laboratory testing to evaluate the acceptability of materials used on the Mtentu River Bridge and road construction.
• Interpreting engineering test methodologies in accordance with COLTO, TMH, TRH, TG-series, SANS, and other relevant standards
• Reviewing and evaluating available construction materials and sources, and preparing laboratory and field computations to evaluate results and classify materials
• Maintaining records of all testing performed in the field and laboratory, and compiling material as-built documentation
• Monitoring the calibration and serviceability of laboratory and field testing equipment, and liaising with commercial laboratories regarding such
• Resolving issues with Contractor and Engineer regarding non-compliance with materials specifications, and making recommendations for corrective action that may be needed
• Communicating with the Employer’s materials staff, and ensuring compliance with the Employer’s reporting and other requirements
• Preparing all materials COLTO as-built records
• Compiling monthly Materials and Laboratory reports for submission to SANRAL

Key Qualifications, Skills and Experience required

Suitable applicants will have/ be:

• B-Tech in Civil Engineering or National Diploma in Civil Engineering
• Professional Technologist registration (preferably).
• Professional Technician registration as a minimum.
• Minimum 15 years’ experience working as a Materials Technician on SANRAL and/or Provincial roads projects.
• Extensive experience in reinforced concrete structures.
• Extensive knowledge and experience of concrete materials.
• Registered and registrable as a professional technician with ECSA
• Advanced skills in material testing and material evaluation.
• Thorough knowledge of COLTO and other relevant Standard Specifications.
• Quality control and civil materials laboratory managing skills are essential.
• Valid driver’s license (minimum code B).
• Proven organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team oriented environment.
