Description of Airbus Upnext DragonFly Demonstrator

UpNext launches a new flight demonstrator, Airbus UpNext DragonFly, to go a step further to pave the way for autonomous flights on commercial aircraft.

In particular, this demonstrator aims to demonstrate the ability to ensure safe flight back and landing.

All the outcomes of this demonstration will contribute to preparing more autonomous aircraft of the next decade.

On top of these technical challenges, this demonstration has to be achieved in less than 30months.

Team spirit, proactivity and pragmatism will be the key ingredients to make this unique journey successful.

Main missions:

DragonFly team is searching for a Computer Vision Test Specialist (M/F) to perform end to end validation (from computer vision algorithms to guidance laws) during critical phases such as taxi and landing. She/he will work closely with the design team.

As such , the jobholder will have to :

  • Benchmark and build the necessary tools to ease computer vision testing in cooperation with developers and Specialists from Airbus subsidiary, A3 in San-Francisco
  • Set-up simulation means (V&V platform) to virtually fly with synthetic image generation in relation with a company specialized in simulation of sensors
  • Automate testing on the V&V platform to assess robustness of the closed loop
  • Check the embedded hardware and software before integration test
  • Perform test on integration simulator in Airbus Facilities
  • Prepare the Flight Test and Analyse Result
  • Pave the way to massive testing capability

The job holder will act autonomously within the team as well as with internal and external stakeholders. He/she shall be innovative, project minded and fluent in english.

You are passionate about aeronautics, new technologies, looking for an accelerated project from concept to flight in 2 years and able to  learn, prototype solutions, constantly adapt to the change, then  this project could be yours joining the DragonFly team.

Duration of the mission:

The mission will last till the flight tests campaign and the associated reports, roughly 24 months (end in April 2023)

Your Boarding Pass:

As the successful candidate you will be able to demonstrate some or all of the following skills and competencies:

  • Educated to Master's degree level in Data Science and/or Aeronautical Engineering
  • Skills in programming (Python, Matlab/simulink)
  • Knowledge of optics (computer vision), flight mechanics and guidance
  • Knowledge of aircraft simulation environment for testing would be a plus
  • Data science knowledge with experience of its application to mass testing results analysis
  • Ability to work in integrated team with AGILE method
  • Negotiation level in English is required
