TITLE:          Programmer / Web Developer

LOCATION:  North Central Office

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 23,000 students. With a Head Start program, three preschools, 29 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district serves a wonderfully diverse mixture of students. A remarkable 62 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students and 51% of our students are Latino and 29% are African American. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 staff, including more than 1,600 teachers.

To help our students achieve this goal, the district is implementing a district-wide initiative called Diploma+.


  • Responsible for the development, installation, service, and support of administrative and instructional software used in the school district
  • The candidate should also be highly motivated with strong organizational and prioritization abilities


  • Develop custom administrative and instructional software to specifications provided by the district, including dynamic data-driven Windows forms and web applications
  • Ensure that applications are coded, documented, and tested in compliance with ISO industry standards
  • Develop integration pathways and applications between existing interdepartmental software packages
  • Assist schools and departments with their website application development
  • Review proposed software purchases (including upgrades to existing software) to ensure district hardware meets the minimum hardware requirements
  • Maintain current backups of source code
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of TIS


  • At least 3 years experience developing custom Windows and web-applications, preferably in the K-12 education environment, using the following technologies
    • NET and/or C#.NET
    • NET 3.5 or later
    • JavaScript
    • AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML)
    • ATLAS
    • XML
    • PHP desired
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or later
  • Understanding of object-oriented development and n-tier software design
  • Understanding of SQL concepts and language fundamentals
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or greater and T-SQL in particular
  • Good understanding of network protocols and web technologies (TCP/IP, HTTP, JavaScript, AJAX)
  • Demonstrated experience in front-end and JavaScript development tools (HTML5, CSS, Node JS, Angular JS, Backbone JS, and jQuery Mobile etc.)
  • Knowledge of XML, JSON and other data transport protocols
  • Understanding of full software development life cycle
  • Must be able to analyze user requirements to derive technical software design and performance requirements
  • Ability to interact professionally with others on the phone and in-person
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service in a professional manner
  • Ability to operate in a flexible team environment with minimal supervision
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including, but not limited to procedures, testing and technical documentation
  • Experience in an educational environment is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree required or working towards bachelor’s degree

  • Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: current generation and legacy application programming languages; system design; process and data modeling techniques; database theory; technologies and tools, benefits and limitations of technology; and project management

  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. staff, administrators, school site personnel, outside vendors and service providers, etc.) for the purpose of providing technical assistance, advice and support

REPORT TO:                         Assistant Director of Technology & Information Systems

EVALUATION:                       Performance will be evaluated by the immediate supervisor in accordance with Board Policy
