Job Description

Role Description

We are looking for an experienced Web Developer (Java or Ruby) to work with the Collections Technology Team working on a project to enhance the Artworld in Britain Website ( https://artworld.york.ac.uk ). The project is funded by the Paul Mellon Centre and will involve the migration of the current Artworld in Britain to a more current, robust technical platform, as well as providing extra functionality for administrators and end users (for example Geomapping).

You will be based in the Collections Technology team, in the Library (Information Services) and will build on the University of York’s Digital Library platform to design, develop and implement leading edge technical components to enhance the current repository infrastructure and support the needs of the Project. You will have input into technical architecture and design decisions and we would welcome applications from candidates who can bring new experiences and ideas to the role. You will be working with academics and help to shape their Digital Humanities vision with your technical knowledge.

You will be a graduate with a degree-level qualification in a computing subject, or more than two years of equivalent employment experience. You’ll have knowledge of current Web development practices such as Java Struts or Ruby Rails and SQL driven databases. You will have excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal. You’ll be a fast-learner who is committed to personal development, and equally comfortable working independently or in a collaborative environment.

This is a 6 month, fixed term vacancy. The salary will be within the range of £32,236 - £39,609 per year (see the University’s guidance on starting salaries ). This is a full time position (37 hours a week) and is available immediately. A flexi-time scheme operates which allows for flexible working within operational guidelines.
