Data Engineer (SQL & Data Integration) | APS6 Equivalent
Rate: $82 - $92 per hour, inc Super
Contract: 12-Month Contract + Potential Extension

The Opportunity
Canberra Consulting is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to support a significant data modernisation initiative within a Federal Government environment.
This role will focus on improving the efficiency, transparency and quality of complex data integration, assessment and cleansing processes. You will play a key role in translating existing SAS-based processes into modern SQL-driven solutions, enhancing automation, maintainability and analytical capability.
Working alongside business and technical stakeholders, you will contribute to the development of robust data pipelines, support data quality initiatives, and assist in the design of analytical views that support critical reporting and decision-making functions.
This is a Canberra-based role with onsite attendance required.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret and translate existing SAS code into efficient, maintainable SQL solutions.
- Develop and enhance ELT processes and data integration workflows.
- Design and implement automated data cleansing and validation processes.
- Contribute to the development of derived variables and analytical datasets.
- Assess and maintain data quality, integrity and fitness for purpose.
- Conduct quality assurance activities on load scripts and data processes.
- Support the design of analytical views and reporting datasets.
- Provide analysis and evidence-based recommendations regarding data specifications and derivation activities.
- Assist with refinement of validation, compliance and data governance processes.
- Contribute to technical documentation, operating procedures and supporting artefacts.
- Support ad hoc data analysis and SQL-based investigations as required.
Skills and ExperienceEssential - Demonstrated experience as a Data Engineer, Data Analyst, ETL Developer or similar role.
- Strong SQL development skills, including complex query development and optimisation.
- Experience designing and supporting data integration, transformation and cleansing processes.
- Experience working with structured datasets and data quality frameworks.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to document technical processes and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
Highly Desirable - Experience interpreting or converting SAS code into SQL.
- Experience with ELT/ETL development and data warehouse environments.
- Experience working within Australian Government or highly regulated environments.
- Understanding of data governance, compliance and validation processes.
