We are recruiting a senior-level backend Java engineer for a 2-year contract position supporting a major airline's customer notifications platform, based in Phoenix, Arizona. This role offers the opportunity to work on a highly complex, business-critical system that manages customer communications throughout the travel journey, serving millions of interactions across SMS, email, push notifications, mobile wallet updates, and real-time event-driven systems.
Responsibilities- Develop, maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance large-scale, business-critical applications in hosted production environments
- Support a mature, integration-heavy platform consisting of approximately 100 applications with integrations across 44 internal client systems
- Resolve complex production issues and participate in on-call rotation to provide Level 1 production support
- Collaborate with experienced team members on platform-specific development and enhancement work
- Design and implement solutions within a highly regulated environment governed by DOT, Canadian, GDPR, and other compliance requirements
- Communicate technical decisions clearly and collaborate across multiple teams to support platform reliability and stability
Qualifications
- Required
- 6+ years of enterprise software development experience with hands-on Java and Spring Boot
- Strong production support expertise and experience maintaining business-critical applications in hosted environments
- Proficiency with Azure cloud platforms
- Experience with Kafka and event-driven systems
- Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical decisions and problem-solving approaches clearly
- Willingness to participate in periodic on-call rotation
- Ability to work onsite in Phoenix on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
- Preferred
- Notification or messaging-platform experience, including SMS, email, push notifications, mobile-wallet updates, or real-time communications
- Airline industry experience
- Microservices architecture experience
- Experience integrating backend services with mobile applications or supporting Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or iOS Live Activities
- Troubleshooting and supporting mobile endpoints
- Databricks, data lake, or Power BI experience
