STAFFXPERT LLC is seeking a Backend Software Developer on behalf of our client for a remote opportunity supporting a high-priority nuclear technology platform. The ideal candidate will have strong backend development experience and, preferably, a background in the nuclear, nuclear engineering, or nuclear safety domain.
The role involves building a prototype-first platform that supports advanced reactor design, safety-basis development, and regulatory authorization workflows. This is a fast-paced environment focused on rapid iteration, incremental delivery, and close collaboration with engineering subject-matter experts.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop backend data layers for multi-module applications covering design, safety, and review workflows.
Design database schemas, ORM/data-access layers, and migration strategies.
Build and document RESTful APIs supporting form-driven applications and workflow management.
Develop integrations with external engineering systems such as IBM DOORS Next and PTC Windchill.
Implement data mirroring, caching, and provenance tracking while maintaining external systems as the source of truth.
Collaborate with front-end developers, engineering SMEs, and end users on API and schema design.
Contribute to backend architecture and technology-stack decisions.
Translate technical and regulatory documentation into structured data models.
Deliver clean, incremental, and reviewable code through small PRs and frequent releases.
3+ years of professional backend software development experience.
Strong hands-on experience with Python, FastAPI, or comparable asynchronous Python frameworks.
Experience with SQLAlchemy, preferably SQLAlchemy 2.0 typed ORM.
Strong PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, relational modeling, and database migrations.
Experience with Alembic or equivalent migration frameworks.
Proven experience designing and developing RESTful APIs for front-end applications.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, prototype-driven environment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently while communicating technical decisions and trade-offs effectively.
Prior experience in the nuclear, nuclear engineering, nuclear safety, or related regulated industry.
Experience integrating IBM DOORS Next and PTC Windchill through APIs.
Understanding of system-of-record and data-provenance patterns.
Experience with Docker and containerized application deployment.
Experience with Pydantic and FastAPI request/response validation.
Experience collaborating with React/TypeScript front-end teams.
Familiarity with enterprise engineering, design, requirements-management, or regulatory systems.
