Our client—a rapidly growing, multi-state specialty contracting and residential trade services firm—is seeking a hands-on, high-ownership Controller to serve as their first dedicated in-house financial leader.



Reporting directly to the CEO, this role is designed for an agile, operationally minded accounting professional ready to own the financial infrastructure from the ground up. You will manage financial reporting, job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules, multi-state payroll compliance, and cash flow forecasting for an enterprise scaling aggressively across the Mid-Atlantic

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Leadership & Close Management: Own the full monthly financial close cycle (targeting a 10-to-15 day cadence) and prepare consolidated reporting packages including P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, WIP schedules, and AR aging
  • Job Costing & WIP Control: Build, maintain, and analyze project-level job costing models and WIP schedules. Proactively track actual vs. estimated costs to protect project margins before jobs close.
  • Cash Flow & Budgeting: Develop annual budgets and maintain a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast to partner with the CEO on strategic capital allocation and growth planning.
  • Systems & Data Integrity: Act as the primary system owner for QuickBooks Online (utilizing Projects, Classes, and Locations) and oversee seamless data flow between CRM tools and accounting systems.
  • Accounts Receivable & Commissions: Oversee project-based AR management, DSO reduction, insurance supplement reconciliation, and commission accrual/clawback tracking linked to gross profit.
  • Multi-State Compliance: Ensure seamless multi-state payroll compliance across operating jurisdictions in the Mid-Atlantic region.



Candidate Profile & Required Qualifications

  • Industry Experience: 3 to 7+ years of dedicated accounting experience in construction, specialty trade contracting (e.g., roofing, exterior services, HVAC), or project-based billing environments.
  • Technical Mastery: Demonstrated expertise in building, explaining, and managing WIP schedules and project job costing.
  • Software Expertise: Advanced hands-on proficiency with QuickBooks Online (specifically Projects and Classes/Locations functionality) and operational CRM integrations.
  • Leadership & Authority: High level of ownership and business acumen—comfortable serving as a true financial partner to the CEO and pushing back on operational leaders when data demands it.
  • Multi-State Operations: Proven track record managing multi-state payroll and compliance across at least two states.
  • Education & Credentials: CPA or CMA designation is preferred, but equivalent hands-on construction accounting expertise will be heavily weighted.
