Confidential Controller Search | a16z-Backed Technology Company

I’m partnering with a high-growth, a16z-backed real estate technology company on a newly created Controller opportunity. This is a foundational Controller role and an opportunity to build the accounting function rather than inherit an established infrastructure.

Position: Controller

Location: San Francisco, CA | Remote – U.S. Time Zones

Compensation: $200K–$250K Base + Equity

Company Stage: Series B

Travel expectations: 6 weeks per year for company off-sites, onboarding, and key business initiatives.

Must Haves:

  • CPA or equivalent technical accounting rigor
  • 6 to10 years of accounting experience, including 3 to5 years in a senior accounting leadership
  • Worked in a high-growth, multi-location, transactional, marketplace, payments, property, or operationally complex business.
  • Strong GAAP, revenue recognition, reconciliations, and month-end close experience.
  • Hands-on cash-to-accrual conversion experience.
  • Proven ability to rebuild a chart of accounts and source-to-general ledger mapping.
  • Comfortable remaining hands-on while managing a small accounting team.
  • Led an ERP implementation or migration.
  • First audit / audit-readiness experience.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Big Four or top regional accounting background + startup operating experience
  • Indirect tax / sales tax experience across multiple jurisdictions
  • Payment processor / marketplace money movement experience
  • Accounting automation and data systems experience

The Opportunity:

This is not a traditional maintenance Controller position. You’ll be responsible for building the accounting infrastructure underneath a rapidly scaling business, including:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Owning the accounting function and monthly close.
  • Converting the books from cash/hybrid accounting to full accrual.
  • Leading revenue recognition, AP/AR, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Rebuilding the chart of accounts and source-to-GL processes.
  • Preparing for the company’s first financial statement audit.
  • Leading ERP selection, implementation, and data migration.
  • Building reliable location-level P&Ls.
  • Improving accounting automation.

The ideal candidate has a strong bias for action, ownership, and urgency. This is a high-growth environment where the Controller will need to roll up their sleeves and do what it takes to get the job done, particularly during critical periods.
