A well-established national nonprofit is hiring a Controller to lead its day-to-day accounting operations and oversee financial reporting, audit, compliance, internal controls, and accounting team development. This is a hands-on leadership role reporting to the CFO. The Controller will be expected to stay close to the work while also improving systems, strengthening processes, and helping the Finance team operate more effectively.

Responsibilities
- Lead monthly and annual close
- Oversee financial statements, journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting
- Manage the annual audit and serve as the primary contact for external auditors
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls
- Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and revenue accounting
- Support tax, regulatory, and nonprofit compliance requirements
- Review accounting work and provide technical guidance to the team
- Manage, coach, and develop accounting staff
- Improve accounting systems, procedures, and workflows
- Partner with the CFO and other departments on financial operations and reporting
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Monitor accounting guidance and ensure continued GAAP compliance
Qualifications
- Active CPA license
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, Director of Accounting, or equivalent experience
- Strong nonprofit accounting background
- Significant audit and financial reporting experience
- Advanced knowledge of GAAP, close, reconciliations, and internal controls
- Experience managing and developing accounting teams
- Experience with Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or a comparable ERP
- Exposure to multi-entity, multi-state, or grant-funded accounting
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
