This role entails the long-distance, cross-border transportation of specialized dangerous goods. The driver is responsible for the safe and punctual collection and delivery of shipments while providing professional service to all consignors and consignees. Furthermore, the driver is expected to maintain vehicles and equipment diligently to minimize operational disruptions. Candidates must be available for extensive travel, with operations conducted outside South African borders for approximately 90–95% of each month for the foreseeable future. The majority of assignments will focus on long-haul transport from South Africa to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
DUTIES:
● Liaise with the respective Controller(s) on a daily basis regarding collection and deliver of customer goods.
● Understanding of road safety & dangerous goods regulations, especially road regulations in foreign countries.
● On-time pickup and delivery of and reporting any undue delays or deviations.
● Reporting of accidents and incidents immediately to relevant Line or SHEQ Manager.
● Taking responsibility of loads until off-loading.
● Render professional services at all times.
● Carrying out of vehicle inspections and checks to ensure safety at all times.
● Adhere to any and all company, client or country policies, rules and safety regulations.
● Route planning and staying on route without deviation.
● Taking responsibility of monitoring of fuel usage and fuel shortages.
● Obtain relevant clearances en-route as per Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
● Ensure accurate administration of relevant documentation, checks and clearances.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
● Valid PRDP (DGP) & Code 14 (EC, Goods/Dangerous Goods) driver’s license.
● Valid HAZCHEM Certificate, passport, work permit/visa and health medicals
● Minimum of 10 years’ experience in transportation of goods/dangerous goods into South Africa and around borders (Congo/Zimbabwe/Swaziland/Malawi)
● Technical Aptitude: Must demonstrate the technical skill and physical capability to conduct roadside tire repairs and maintenance on heavy-duty vehicles.
● Language Proficiency: Ability to communicate in regional vernaculars (Shona, French, Swahili) is highly advantageous to assist with cross-border operations, but not critical.
● Minimum of grade 12 or Matric equivalent.
