Our Client
Our client is a fast-growing, purpose-driven company based in the Utrecht area. They are scaling their data capability and are looking for a Senior Data Engineer who thrives in an environment where you genuinely make a difference — not one where you hand off tickets and wait for a sign-off.
This is not a role for someone who is used to large teams, rigid processes, and narrow ownership. You will be joining a compact, close-knit, driven in-house tech team where your work has direct business impact and where breadth is just as valued as depth.
The Role
As Senior Data Engineer you are not just a builder — you are the person who understands the platform end to end. You see how a change in one pipeline affects reporting downstream, how a new data source puts pressure on the warehouse, and how today's architectural choices create tomorrow's technical debt. That systems-level thinking is central to this role.
Day to day you will own the full data pipeline — from ingestion to the dashboards that drive business decisions. You will work closely with data analysts and reporting specialists and will be the go-to person for architectural guidance within the team. The tech stack is built on Microsoft Azure, and you will be working with Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, and Power BI on a daily basis.
The role is hands-on by design. You will be expected to build, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve — while never losing sight of how the pieces fit together.
What is on offer:
- Salary between €70.000 and €85.000 gross per year, depending on experience
- Annual performance bonus
- 4 days per week on-site in the Utrecht area
Tasks & Responsibilities
- Act as the data platform architect — understanding the full system and anticipating the impact of changes across pipelines, storage, and reporting layers;
- Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes using Azure Data Factory;
- Develop and manage data warehouses and data lakes that serve reporting, analytics, and BI needs;
- Integrate data from diverse sources — databases, APIs, and external feeds — into a clean, reliable data platform;
- Transform raw data into structured, analytics-ready formats;
- Collaborate closely with analysts and Power BI users to ensure data is accurate, accessible, and timely;
- Own data quality and governance — implementing standards and monitoring for issues proactively;
- Guide architectural decisions and make sure the platform scales sustainably as the business grows;
- Troubleshoot data issues end-to-end — you own the problem until it is solved.
Your Profile
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in a data engineering role;
- A genuine architectural mindset — you naturally think about how changes ripple across a platform and make decisions with the full picture in mind;
- Strong, proven expertise with Microsoft Azure — including Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL Database, and related data services;
- Solid experience building and maintaining ELT pipelines, data warehouses, and data lakes;
- Strong SQL skills and solid data modelling knowledge;
- Experience with Python for data processing tasks;
- Familiarity with Power BI and how data feeds into reporting;
- A proactive, ownership mindset — you spot problems and fix them without waiting to be asked;
- Comfortable working in a scale-up or SME environment where priorities shift and autonomy is expected;
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical decisions for non-technical stakeholders;
- Based in the Netherlands already and able to commute to the Utrecht area 4 days per week.
