Job Title: Data Engineer / Senior Data Engineer (1-Year Contract)

Location: Hong Kong

Department: Digitalisation

Role Summary

This role within Pacific Basin's Digitalisation team is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of a strategic in-house data platform initiative that will support commercial and operational decision-making across the organisation.

You will be the technical owner of the solution's data architecture, calculation engines, backend services, and core business logic — designing, building, and deploying a full-stack data solution that is scalable, auditable, and tightly integrated with Pacific Basin's wider data ecosystem (Microsoft Fabric and related enterprise platforms) and relevant external data sources.

This is not a pipeline-only role. You will work alongside the Product Engineering team on frontend, deployment, and cross-system alignment, but you are expected to have strong capabilities across data engineering, backend development, and system integration yourself, so that you can independently translate business requirements into production-ready features without acting through intermediaries.

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract role. Conversion to a permanent position will be considered at the end of the contract, based on project outcomes and individual performance.

Responsibilities

Business Domain & Calculation Logic

  • Design and implement core calculation and business logic engines for commercial and operational workflows
  • Translate business requirements from Chartering, Operations, and Finance directly into functional and technical specifications
  • Implement regulatory and compliance calculations relevant to the shipping industry
  • Ensure full traceability and audit trail for every calculation output

Data Architecture, Modelling & Delivery

  • Design and maintain the relational data model underpinning the solution
  • Build and maintain ETL / ELT pipelines for ingestion, transformation, and reporting
  • Lead data ingestion and integration from source systems (profiling, mapping, and validation)
  • Apply data governance best practices — lineage, versioning, and quality controls

Backend Engineering & Integrations

  • Design and develop backend services and APIs
  • Build integrations with internal enterprise systems and external data providers, including webhooks and secure authentication (e.g. HMAC-SHA256)
  • Ensure API versioning, backward compatibility, and performance SLOs

Platform Integration, Deployment & Cross-System Alignment

  • Partner with Product Engineering on platform integration, deployment, and cross-system alignment
  • Contribute independently to CI/CD, containerised deployment, monitoring, and rollback
  • Ensure architectural consistency with Pacific Basin's wider data and application ecosystem

Delivery & Handover

  • Support UAT, deployment planning, training material, and post-go-live stabilisation
  • Communicate findings, design decisions, and progress clearly to technical and non-technical audiences

Skills Capabilities & Qualifications:

Must-Have Requirements

  • Degree or above in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related field
  • 5-8 years of experience in related fields
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, including production API frameworks (e.g. FastAPI, Django, or Flask)
  • Proven experience designing relational data models and building production-grade ETL / ELT pipelines
  • Hands-on experience building and integrating REST APIs and webhooks, including authentication, signature validation, and versioning
  • Experience with Azure cloud services, containerised deployment (Docker), and CI/CD
  • Experience implementing complex business or financial calculation logic in production
  • Strong understanding of data governance, lineage, and audit requirements
  • Ability to work directly with business stakeholders to elicit and translate requirements without an intermediary

Nice-to-Have Requirements

  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, and Azure data services

Attributes Personality:

  • Strong ownership mindset with ability to drive a critical initiative independently from design to production
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment with multiple priorities
  • Highly analytical with strong attention to detail, particularly around numbers, calculations, and audit trails
  • Practical and delivery-focused; able to move from concept to production
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage credibly with commercial, operational, and IT stakeholders
  • Curious and proactive in learning the shipping domain
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous problem spaces, where requirements evolve and solutions need to be iteratively refined

If you are selected, you will be continuously assessed not only on the basis of your performance, but also on the basis of your attitude and behavior. Cultural fit and adherence to Company values is of paramount importance. We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace where all colleagues feel valued and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. Please apply with a full résumé, salary expectation and contact details to the Human Resources Department at [email redacted, apply via Company website]. We only accept CVs in pdf format.
