About the Opportunity
A well‑reputed, global software company in the Ottawa area is looking to add a Senior Database Engineer to their growing R&D group. Reporting directly to the VP of R&D, you will own the design, optimization, reliability, and protection of database systems across the Microsoft SQL Server platform while operating within an Agile/Scrum framework.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain scalable database solutions, including conceptual data models and instance configurations for SQL Server.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and tune existing database systems to maximize real‑time transactional performance.
- Define and implement robust security protocols, data backup strategies, and high‑availability solutions.
- Partner with development teams to support new feature designs, future system capacity planning, and complex production deployments in distributed environments.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of architecting and scaling SQL Server database systems with a focus on high‑availability and real‑time transactional performance.
- 4+ years managing various DBMS (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, etc.) at scale in live, production environments.
- Exceptional debugging, performance tuning, and root‑cause analysis skills.
- Comfort navigating fast‑paced product cycles and juggling shifting priorities in an Agile environment.
- Ownership mindset with a focus on clean design, automated workflows, and building reliable data platforms.
Technical Skills
- Master‑level understanding of relational database theory, transaction isolation levels, and data modeling.
- Advanced T‑SQL mastery and deep knowledge of SQL Server internals.
- Strong experience with Windows Server and PowerShell scripting, and comfort in Linux environments.
- Nice‑to‑have: hands‑on experience with cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, Azure, etc.).
