Overview

Full‑time DevOps Software Engineer at Garmin Canada headquarters in Cochrane, AB. Responsible for design, development, and maintenance of system tools and testing infrastructure essential for product development & technology teams.

Essential Functions

  • Work on modern tech stacks to deliver high‑performant, highly reliable distributed systems for data processing and analysis for Global Garmin teams.
  • Design database systems to manage exponential growth in sensor data used for new technologies and products such as Rally pedal‑based power meters.
  • Leverage high‑performance grid computing solutions while developing frameworks for prototype & evaluation of complex algorithms (e.g., Garmin Elevate optical heart rate technology).
  • Design distributed file systems to facilitate collaboration across global teams spanning four continents.
  • Consistently revisit the needs of product development & technology teams and help them define the tools they need for efficient work.
  • Design, develop, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for different products and tools.
  • Maintain and create tools and web apps used by product development & technology teams.
  • Learn or get familiar with new scripting or programming languages to complete tasks.
  • First line of support to internal customers.
  • Run diagnostic and profiling on infrastructure to detect issues beforehand.
  • Follow scrum agile process.
  • Participate in peer code and design review.
  • Create and update documentation such as user manuals, software design documents, system requirements, meeting minutes, and project retrospectives.
  • Train and mentor new team members or interns.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent academics (GPA ≥ 3.0).
  • Proficient in Python (typing, async, pytest, virtual environments).
  • General knowledge of SQL databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Experience with a web framework (React, Flask, FastAPI, or Django).
  • Experience with a CI/CD tool such as Jenkins or Zuul.
  • Proficient with Git (preferably command‑line).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide reliable solutions to complex problems using sound problem‑solving techniques.
  • Works under general supervision of a team leader or mentor.
  • Detail‑oriented with ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Works well with others across several worldwide locations in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Experience working in a team environment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with HPC cluster.
  • Experience with Docker.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Elastic/Opensearch.
  • Experience maintaining small‑to‑medium‑sized network infrastructure.
  • Experience with distributed systems.
  • System administrator / IT experience with Windows (10, 11 and server).
  • System administrator / IT experience with Linux (Rocky, Ubuntu).
  • Experience with security systems such as Active Directory, OAuth, and Hashicorp Vault.
  • Experience with Google tests and code coverage tools.
  • Experience with programming languages such as C, C++, and C#.
  • Experience with Ansible.
  • Experience with common Python packages such as poetry, scipy, and pandas.
  • Experience with build systems including Makefiles, CMake, or Waf.
