Senior Engineer - Backend (Java/Kotlin)

What you’ll be doing

The Senior Engineer will design and deliver technical solutions that meet business requirements. They will embody Reapit’s core values of Trust, Collaboration, Innovation, Excellence, and People.

Key Responsibilities

Planning and Requirement Analysis

• Collaborate Across Departments: Work closely with product managers, quality assurance, and other departments to refine technical requirements and contribute to solution design.

• Requirement Analysis and Estimation: Contribute to analysing technical requirements, conducting research, and estimating effort for planned work.

System Design

• Technical Design and Implementation: Develop technical designs that meet business requirements and architectural standards, ensuring security, scalability, performance, and maintainability.

Implementation

• Code Development and Review: Actively write code and participate in the code review process, upholding and contributing to coding standards, while effectively applying AI-enabled development tools and workflows to improve productivity, quality, and delivery outcomes.

• Testing and Validation: Perform rigorous testing and validation of solutions to ensure the quality of deliverables.

• Documentation: Develop and maintain accurate documentation for engineering projects, ensuring all necessary materials are produced and maintained for future reference and compliance.

Project Delivery

• Agile Participation: Actively participate in agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives, and reviews.

• Project Delivery: Contribute to delivering projects on time and to the required quality standards through strong technical execution, collaboration, and ownership of assigned work.

Maintenance

• Technical Guidance: Provide technical guidance and support to team members through collaboration, code reviews, and sharing best practices.
• Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement opportunities to improve performance, maintainability, and engineering effectiveness.
• Incident Management: Contribute to incident investigation and resolution, support clear stakeholder communication, and help identify follow-up improvements to reduce recurrence.

Who we're looking for

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
• 7+ years in back-end software development with Java - Essential. Kotlin experience preferred.
• Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and backend services, ideally with Spring/Spring Boot - Essential. Front-end web application experience, ideally with React, is favourable but not required.
• Experience working with distributed teams.

Technical Skills

• Strong proficiency in Java for backend development, with Kotlin experience preferred.
• Knowledge of relational and non-relational databases.
• Understanding of distributed systems (ideally microservices, event-based architecture).
• Experience with testing methodologies (unit/integration/E2E testing, mocking, shift-left).
• Proficiency in CI/CD pipelines and build tools.
• Exposure to public cloud platforms (preferably AWS) and familiarity with IaC tools like CloudFormation, CDK, and Docker.
• Proven experience and strong proficiency in agentic AI development, with an emphasis on improving developer productivity (e.g., coding assistants, agentic workflows for test generation/debugging, documentation and runbook automation, and evaluation/guardrails for safe adoption).
• Understanding of SOLID design principles.

We expect your success and impact in the early stages of your career with us to look something like this:

Within 1 month

• You will be making a positive contribution on smaller work items to introduce you to the technology stack.
• You will participate in planning and estimation sessions, technical scoping exercises, and code reviews from day one, to help understand both the domain and the code, and provide your own feedback from your prior experience.
• You will begin building strong working relationships with team members and gaining an understanding of how the team collaborates and delivers.
• You will begin building strong relationships with other departments including Product, Design, QA, and Operations.

Within 3 months

• You will feel comfortable with the domain and Reapit’s products & services.
• You will be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of the core areas of the technology stack.
• You will be independently contributing ideas for improvements both for the product and team processes.
• You will be actively contributing to delivery quality, engineering standards, and a positive team culture, including practical use of AI-enabled development workflows to improve team effectiveness.
• You will be working collaboratively with the Product department to understand requirements and plan work.

Within 6 months

• Your contributions will be helping shape technical solutions and influencing the future direction of the products.
• You will be delivering complex aspects of the project with a high level of autonomy.
• You will be participating in agile processes, technical planning and design conversations.
• You will be contributing to a positive, collaborative team culture and supporting innovation and continuous improvement.
• You will be championing engineering quality and best practices through solution design, implementation, testing, and documentation.
